As alot of you know I use to post quite a bit. Well last year I found out after losing almost 50 pounds, 190 down to 145 lbs. Becoming anemic and had critically low B12 and folic acid levels. I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. It's not life threatening and diet modification is the cure. What it basically, is I am Allergic to WHEAT,RYE,BARLEY AND MALT! With having such low B12 levels it really affected my fine motor skills and missed fish after fish. I was feeling the bite to late and not perfoming up to my standards and my partner could tell from my lack of energy from the anemia. Well I had to pretty much abandon last tourney season after missing a fish that would have won us a first place finish and $4000.(we finished #3. My energy levels were so low and I was missing work so much while all the testing was going on that I just had to bow out of competition. Now I am back with the help of supplements and ready to take on the new season. BAD PART!, NO BREAD,NO PASTA, NO BEER, OR ANY OTHER PRODUCT CONTAINING THOSE INGREDIENTS. So the goodnews is I have put back on 25 pounds of lean muscle because my diet has become super healthy and junk food and fast food is a thing of the past. JUST WONDERING IF ANYBODY ELSE HAS CELIACS? it would be interesting to hear from others with this affliction!!

I have a very mild form of gluten allergy. It doesnt effect me so much, but I can actually tell a difference when I eat gluten free things. The only problem is gluten free tastes like ***. I choose to deal with mild consequences.

Yeah I take iron and B12 too! It's amazing how low levels of B12 can make you so uncoordinated. good to go now and putting my cast on a dime. I really didn't realize exactly how uncoordinated I was until I went through a whole battery of testing. Besides being 15 lbs. under my target weight I have all my strength back and coordination. And being on a diet with no bad foods it takes me about 2 weeks to gain a pound or two. My strength, coordination, and stamina (result of anemia) I will eventually get the weight back but, the other issues mentioned meant most!

Thats the thing with me though I get severe consequences. I ate 7 Dill Pringle chips before my daughter could warn me the dill flavor contains wheat and I spent the next day and a half on the tiolet and lost 6lbs.

I have a friend that found out just a few years ago that she had celiac disease.  She only weighed about 95lbs but was losing weight and all she ate was junk.  She was a student here at the hopital and for lunch she'd have peanut butter and crackers, chocalate chip cookies or oreos, and a bag of doritos.  She contacted some institute in chicago that gives out gift baskets and booklets to those with celiac disease to help you with shopping for food.  I thought that was pretty neat that they send out free food and info to help out.

They tested me a lot for Celiac's and it ended up being the Crohn's. They had me on a die hard rice and protein diet and I'm still on it now for the Crohns. In the past year I have been up to 240 pounds because of the steroids and when sick 160-170. I'm know 200. >:(

I know EXACTLY what you mean by the B12 issues though and missing fish. I take a B12 and B6 supplement along with a Calcium, Vitamin D, Folic Acid, and C supplement along with a regular vitamin and living off Vitamin Water (10 calorie). I missed so many fish on plastics and the jig last year it was pathetic and frustrating. Only Weds I missed 6 fish on the jig, all 6 just about ripped the rod out of my hand and I didn't know what to do and missed them.

F'n sucks and is costing me $$$$.

I'm also really anemix as well with all the internal bleeding, does Iron help at all and what supplements are you on?

Man, Crohn's disease must be tough. Not to make light of your disease, but I once hooked up with a chick with Crohns, and at the time I had NO idea what it was. The next morning she got her dress REAL quick and tried leaving. I somehow talked her into staying for about 20 more seconds, and highly regret doing so. I had no idea you crap like 20 times a day, and comes on like a freight train. Worst. day. ever.

I have a family member that was diagnosed with a case of it. It can be hard to get used to. And a gluten free diet is EXPENSIVE depending on the foods.

I have the exact opposite problem most days and all the ulcers are in my upper intestine and esophagus so I puke non stop. And the valves on my stomach are shot. They tested me non stop for Celiacs because it was in my family. Obviously 4 blood drawings are not enough. When they thought I had it I seriously lived off these super expense protein shakes. And it is useless to try to go out to a restuarant. I feel for you Tr20.

I am just on B12 and iron and have to stay away from anything with wheat, rye barley and malt. YES the food is expensive my grocery bill just about doubled. I eat steak and potatoes when I go out or non breaded chicken. I have adjusted and am well!

So does this happen when you try to rapidly lose weight?

No I never tried to lose any weight! I had a good athletic build and was healthy. I had a tragedy in my life (my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia in oct. 07) and stress can bring this on after lying dormant in my case for 34 for years. I am now gaining weight back in the form of lean muscle because of the diet I stick to, but it the weight doesn't come fast because of the diet as well, but it is better! LBH thanks and I may get in touch with you but, in my area there are also some pretty good gluten free products. By the way my daughter finished her therapy and as healthy as any other 10 year old. The last two and a half years have been pure hell, but thats all over now and I can concentrate on fishing and not whats going on with my little one. I am calling this THE SUMMER OF CHANGE!!!

Also LBH Betty Crocker gluten free brownies are the best by far. Their cake mixes eehhh so,so. I am just glad there are pizza doughs and other mixes available. Not exactly great tasting but, you can hide that with sauces and toppings. It just makes me upset to see an awesome burger coming out and I won't be able to try it.

And for BLee basically I could make a beautiful club sandwich or any other delicious sandwich and all the nutrients provide by the meats and cheeses would but made null and void by the bread. Wheat, rye, malt and barley are basically a poison to me. Some celiacs have a reaction to 1/48th of a slice of bread. I try not to test my boundaries and stick with a gluten free diet.

Well than congrats to your whole family for better things to come :).  Glad both of you are healthy and recovering.  This is the first time I have heard of Celiac, just good thing to know I suppose.
