jvox Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Anyone try these out?? I picked on up today (baby bass), but didnt get anything on it.(didnt get anything on any other baits either.) I trying to figure out how good it works to see if I'm gonna tie it on first thing tomorrow. Quote
BassinBoy Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Down right the best shallow crankbait ive ever used. Actually just got back from a farm pond and caught about a half a dozen bass on the bluegill color in an hour. Waked on the surface or burned right beneath, it is just pure dynamite in shallow ponds and lakes. Its just a great crankbait period. Quote
jvox Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 Awesome man thanks. I usually am fishing from shore and the water isnt too deep, but I wanted to use a crankbait so I figured I'd pick one up. Picked up a Chatter Frog today too, hopefully I get something on both tomorrow!! Quote
cdabelow Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 The Baby 1- is one of my top 5 favorite baits. I use it alot early of a morning when most people like a top water bait. It is great for fishing over the top of shallow grass when it hangs up give it a jerk and hold on. I have had tons of strikes as soon as I jerk it free I guess from all the rucus it causes. I love Alabama Shad!!! And the ones with the glitter!! Quote
SimonDM17 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Great bait. I like Chrome or Pearl/Black back, because I'm not adventurous. I like the original series, though--I don't like the rattle on the Elites, and they seem to run a bit shallower. Also, swap the hooks. The bluegill color, if it's the same as on the waker, is pretty sweet, though. Quote
cdabelow Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Also, swap the hooks. quote] x2 the hoods are junk!!! Quote
BassinBoy Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Also, swap the hooks. Ya they are not quality hooks by any means. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I don't like the Mann's baits because of the shoddy hooks and their durability. I have had several (4 or more...) where the lips broke. A comparably priced, yet better super shallow crank is the Bandit Footloose. It comes in a whole lot more colors, and most these days come with good vanadium hooks - the same alloy that VMC uses. Quote
jvox Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 Yeah I actually saw the Footloose on the internet the other day and thats what I was looking for when I picked up the Mann's, but they didnt have em at my local Dick's. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Great bait, try the Red Crawfish also. I caught more Bass on these and Wiggle Warts then any other crank. Quote
Bronzeback117 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 What size hooks do you replace them with? Quote
riverfisher Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 -1 is a great bait SMB crush them I mainy use the red craw but I have all the flavors!! Quote
iamjoe2 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 this months bassmaster had a article on modifying these somehow, i didnt really read it seeing as how i dont own one, but if you do check it out... Quote
SimonDM17 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 What size hooks do you replace them with? I believe it's a 4 and a 6, larger one is on the belly. They seem to hang up a little bit, so if I were really going to put a lot of time into it, I'd find some very small but strong split rings, and swap those too...maybe reduce the hook hangup a bit. BFBoy Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I fished the 1minus, last night, for about a half an hour. The second cast produced one of the biggest bluegills I've ever seen. I have rather large hands, and it completely covered my hand. It was as deep as it was long and more than an inch thick. Two bass were also landed, one while stop and go cranking, and one while twitching on top. (I had missed three others on top before hooking that one). Last week, I caught 6 on the same lure. This was one of the elite series in Ghost Minnow. It casts like a rocket. Good bait. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted July 10, 2008 Super User Posted July 10, 2008 This is hands down best shallow crankbait I own. I like the bone color or solid chart. for about 90% of my fishing. Like someone said the hooks are not very good so change them if they are not sharp. As far as other baits this one outfishes all others I have tried; Storm sub-wart, Bandit footloose, LC CB-001, Jackall cherry 0 footer. The bandits I cannot even get to dive below the surface? kms399 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I have one rod that will always have a baby 1- on it. they work so well. I caught a 40" musky on one last sunday and the hooks were fine after that still sharp and not bent at all. I have caught many bass on the same one as well so I'm not sure what peoples problems are with the hooks. Quote
gar-tracker Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Very good lure, you may want to try Rapalas shallow running crank bait with the weird lip, also a great shallow runner. Quote
CRFisher Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Sitting in WalMart at lunch today for something else, but drifted by the fishing section ended up buying one based on this thread. It fishes alot like a flatfish but your able to burn it in, where a flatfish is slow or nothing. Based on 1/2 hr of fishing this looks to me like a soon to be favorite. Quote
Avalonjohn44 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I bought one yesterday, from the 'elite' series... It was not elite. The bill is weak, just like the other ones I bought. Hopefully it will last a full day of fishing. I doubt it. Luckily Gander had them in a clearance bin so I didn't have to pay full price for it. Will stick with Bandits after this. Quote
