But its not SOP probably for a reason..

-matt-

because...

Which is worse? A tazer or a solid ***-kicking courtesy of security officials and players?

Ever see someone rush a wrestling ring from the crowd? The wrestlers don't screw around. There have been some runners who have gotten the absolute crap beaten out of them.

I have been tased by the police before( under my agreement during my internship with a NH PD). I can say it is quite possibly the worse 5 seconds of my life.

I've never understood why people think tazers should be a second to last resort. Things would end so much quicker and easier if more bad guys got tazed. It's not fair to the police to tie their hands when it comes to dealing with a situation that could be potentially dangerous.

Just because the kid was acting like a fool getting chased around doesnt mean he couldn't have stopped and potentially pulled a gun or knife and attacked a player or other personnel. Tazing was fine and should be standard operating procedure.

This.

Their priority is to get the dummy off the field ASAP. 10 000 volts makes the job 10 000x easier.

I dont agree with the tazing of that kid. He wasnt running AT anybody, he was just running around acting like a fool, trying to get his 5 minutes of fame. The officers obviously got tired of chasing him so he got the juice.

Exactly how I feel. I have no issues with this. They did the bare minimum amount of damage, IMO.

I've seen this once in person, and the cops were yelling at the guy that he was under arrest. By continuing to run, he was technically resisting arrest and fair game for the taser.

On the flip side, remember Monica Seles? She was a German tennis star who was shanked a handful of times right on the court by some obsessed nutcase with a shrine of her in his home. This one incident alone should get a person over 15 y/o tased if they run onto the field.

I would rather get tackled by a cop than tazed

Had they bumrushed the kid and broken his arm or something and he was led off in agony in front of the cameras, there would've been a bigger backlash than had they quickly tased him.

There's a video online of a naked streaker at a soccer match in Europe, where a player kinda just flailed himself into the runner and busted his jaw and some teeth.

This really is a lose/lose situation for the security folks. Either they forcefully removed the clown and accept the possible bad press, or let them run circles around them and humiliate them.

Personally, as a sports fan, I absolutely hate this kind of attention-whoring.  Tasing is a good precedent to set IMO.  Nobody wants to get tased in front of a jeering crowd.

He was breaking the law, and he was failing to comply to the officers.  It was justified.

Well, obviously the chance of getting tazed didn't deter anyone. A fan ran out onto the field the very next night in Philly AGAIN. ;D

That's because everyone keeps talking about it and playing it on TV over and over again. Like I said, if this were SOP then nobody would make a big deal about it and people would stop doing it.

I'd be willing to bet a teste that the taser they used was far more than 10,000 volt. I have a 650,000 volt stun gun and it didn't put me to the ground at all, let alone as fast as the taser did with that kid.

He's lucky he got what he got. If'n he did that here when Rizzo was mayor, he'd have been shot or they would have pulled a Rodney King on him. How dare he disrupt my baseball game.

I don't know what the voltage is on the tasers that are carried by police. It is plenty to do the job. I have a friend who is the chief of police in a local community. When his force started carrying them, they all were tasered so if (when) they were sued for using them they could say they knew what they were doing to the bad guy/victim. He said there was no way he would do it again. It is a very unpleasant experience.

With that said, I think it should be standard procedure in this situation. If the knot-head had stopped immediately when told to do so, maybe not. He didn't. He wanted attention and he got it. Good enough.

Seems to me, there are methods available to take someone down without chasing to far.

We have small caliber weapons with net throwing adapters that can take 500 lb lions, deer and other loose animals down on the run and having one on hand at the games seems easier than sending 10,000 volts to a teenage on national TV.

Even a pair of bolos would take him down on the run.

There have been associated deaths with the use of a taser.

I think I provided two alternatives that would be more entertaining to the TV viewers and fans than tasing someone.

A friend of mine at work mentioned the net option too.  Said it would make for great entertainment in the process.

The taser was completely unnecessary. Paul Blart realized he wasn't going to be able to keep up with the young guy, so he popped him in the back with 50,000 volts to prevent being embarrassed. I'm usually all for the use of tasers, but this was irrational.

My 02........

Being a LEO here in PA I have a little more insight than most.

The Tazer usage in this situation appears to be justified. LEO's follow a force continuum meaning a progression through various uses of force beginning with officer presence and ending with deadly force.

The Tazer falls BEFORE going hands on with someone. Tazers were designed to be used before going hands on if someone is not following officers commands. In that regard it has been documented that it has decreased officer and suspect injuries by large percentages (70-90% in most of the studies I read).

The officer and other personnel in the video I saw had no way of knowing if the person was drunk, high, possessed a weapon. He was obviously ignoring commands to stop. The Tazer is the next step, like it or not. It effectively ended the persons actions with no ground fighting, struggle, etc.

I would have done the same thing and have seen it done with fleeing suspects. I have been carryng a Tazer for almost 1 year and have not used it yet.

Tazers do not make you urinate yourself. The only signs of being tazed are 2 small puncture wounds from the darts. The shock lasts 5 seconds and once it is over most people immediately return to normal. The "shock" of the 5 second pain is usually what keeps people down but they are fine and can stand right up. It is 50,000 volts. The vast majority of Tazer related injuries are suffered when the suspect falls.

I have been tazed. It was the worst, most painful, 5 seconds of my life. I can tell you one thing, I'd rather be tazed that sprayed with pepper spray which lasts much much longer.

Yep! Yep!

I concur! I'd rather be tazed than pepper sprayed. Actually id prob be a tester for a tazer if the oppurtunity came up. Mainly just to say i was tazed before, and of course the curouisity of being tazed.  :P

They should hire runner wranglers. People who are built well, and can run a 4.4 40. They'd wear exotic, native Indian looking attire, face painted and all. He would come sprinting out and screaming at the top of his lungs when runners decide to interrupt, execute a dramatic tackling display and have him off the field in no time flat.

I'd be a runner wrangler.

A tazing incident at the Players golf tournament on Friday.  A fan was heckling players and other fans as well, a case of too much drinking.  Security tried quietly too guide the attendant off the premises but he refused to go..........he then got a jolt.

ZZZZZZap 'em good.
