Super User Sam Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 Heard the talking heads complaining about the 17-year old Penn State freshman getting tazzed at the Phillies game and how awful it was. A law enforcement officer has no idea if the perk is nuts, drunk, has a weapon, is combative or what are his intentions and I think that officer made the right decision. Kid is a dope. Doesn't say a lot of good things about the State Penn where he is going to school in the fall for brains. Break the law and pay the price. Don't want to get tazzed then don't break the law. Makes sense to me. Quote
Osprey39 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Yeah, I don't get the controversy with that situation. It's not like he shot the guy with a firearm. He used non-lethal force to subdue a guy that was breaking the law. Why is that even an issue? Quote

seyone Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I don't have a problem with somebody getting tased, but I don't really agree with this one. People running out on baseball fields is not rare, so why hasn't anyone else been tased for the same thing? He wasn't tased because the officer thought him to be a threat. He was tased because he made them look stupid. Quote
tallydude Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I disagree. You have no idea what someone is going to do in this day and age. Nonlethal force was used on this kid. He didn't just deserve it, he earned it. Quote

Super User 5bass Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 I dont agree with the tazing of that kid. He wasnt running AT anybody, he was just running around acting like a fool, trying to get his 5 minutes of fame. The officers obviously got tired of chasing him so he got the juice. Quote
Super User Tin Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 Just goes to show how out of shape and lazy some cops are. I wanted to see him tackled or something. Quote

It makes baseball a much more exciting game. ;D Quote

Come on 5bass, they were just helping to give the boy his full 15 minutes of fame. He obviously wanted everyone to look at him, and we are. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 He's breaking the law, trespassing on private property, and possibly creating costs for the team. I would have done the same thing to get him off the field as quickly as possible. Quote
NHfroggin Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 IMO, I dont think the kid should have got tased. Yes of course he is a knucklehead for running onto the field but he was not in any way putting anyone in danger. I think the officer should have been able to to subdue the kid without the use of a less than lethal weapon. -matt- Quote
seyone Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I think the tasing makes the Phillies organization and Mlb look bad. The fact that the tasing was an isolated incident but running on the field is not uncommon tells me that it was not necessary. No reason why all of the security guards couldn't apprehend him the way they always do in every ball park across the country. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 why? It's just a shock...plus, he was probably drunk. Who knows what he would have done once tackled? I think it will probably deter future knuckleheads as well. Quote
seyone Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 He wasn't drinking and somebody did it the following night. Quote

Super User Dan: Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 He wasn't drinking How would they know that at the time? and somebody did it the following night. Yeah, because people keep making a big deal about it. If it were SOP I'd bet it would happen less often... Quote
1inStripes Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Just because the kid was acting like a fool getting chased around doesnt mean he couldn't have stopped and potentially pulled a gun or knife and attacked a player or other personnel. Tazing was fine and should be standard operating procedure. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 But its not SOP probably for a reason.. -matt- because... Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 But its not SOP probably for a reason..-matt- because... Which is worse? A tazer or a solid ***-kicking courtesy of security officials and players? Ever see someone rush a wrestling ring from the crowd? The wrestlers don't screw around. There have been some runners who have gotten the absolute crap beaten out of them. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 I would rather get tackled by a cop than tazed Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 6, 2010 Super User Posted May 6, 2010 I would rather get tackled by a cop than tazed Just a matter of whether you want to lose control yourself due to high voltage or police brutality. Quote
NHfroggin Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 But its not SOP probably for a reason.. -matt- because... IMO, probably because its force that is not needed. Now if the kid began to throw punches at the officer or anyone else, this is when i believe it would be the right time to use a taser. -matt- Quote
