frogtog Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I have found me a new pass time. You know those Bumble Bees that bore holes under your shelter, well I have had it with them. I got my 22 out and loaded it with Rat shot and had myself a ball. I killed 12 out of 20 shots. They won't hold still for you. ;D I've got to run to town and get some more Rat shots. It's amazing what you can do to occupy your time when not fishing. Quote
1inStripes Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I use them for badminton birdies. Pretty good targets with a badminton racket. Quote

MattinOK Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 At the risk of sounding stupid... Wouldn't shooting/whatcking Bumblebees make more mad getting you stung? Quote

Can bumblebees sting? Yup. Once, then they die. I don't understand wanting to kill a bumblebee. If they pose a risk to you or your family it's one thing, but they tend to less a problem than wasps. I tend to like bumblebees. Quote

Super User Dan: Posted April 29, 2010 Super User Posted April 29, 2010 Ahh, that's right. They sting then die. I knew there was something weird about their stinging capabilities. Quote

I shoot them because they are very destructive. They like to bore holes in my shelter and it weakens the structure, the more they bore the weaker it gets. Other than that, It's a great past time. Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 29, 2010 Super User Posted April 29, 2010 Those are Carpenter bees...just get some old soft wood logs..and set them on end..The bees will be more interested in the soft wood logs i.e. pine ect, than they will be in your shelter. Or plant a smaller soft wood tree.. Quote

And if you were that bee, what would you do..? Quote
stratos 375 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Wow, small world, I thought I was the only one who did that. I've got an old garage out back & they are thick this time of year. I smack them with a 3' canoe paddle & knock 'em into left field. I'll have to try shooting them, good idea. I also stand there with a weed eater & shred them. They never seem to understand the concept of string moving at very high RPM's. Great thread! Quote
Super User Dan: Posted April 29, 2010 Super User Posted April 29, 2010 When the 17 year cicadas were out I used to go around shaking small trees so they would all fly out and then see how many I could smash with a wiffle bat. Quote
1inStripes Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I caught those cicadas and fished with a few. Seems like that was a long time ago. Quote
TommyBass Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Ya id say those are carpenter bees. They usually don't bother you any, just tear up your wood. If I remember right, only the females can sting, and you usually don't see them very often. Most of the time its the males and they are as harmless as a house fly, although they seem to think they are tough. I've did the badmitten thing before... definately fun. Have yet to try a 22 though.
