Every time I go out to the lake, and I saw at least 1 person carrying a big utility knife. Anyone else brings them to a fishing trip? and what do you use it for?

I carry a fold out knife for whatever. Never know when you might need to use it.

The place where I fish can be sketchy at times, so I always carry a nice sized blade. More of a comfort thing, I doubt I would use it effectively in self defense.

Maybe not, but it serves as a warning. Even bad

guys don't want to deal with an armed man.

I carry a Cold Steel Ready Edge or a Spyderco Copilot with me fishing. They are not big Knives but I learned my lesson after a Ranger gave the bowie knife I used to carry a sideways glance while checking to see if I had a fishing license.

i always have a pocket knife on me when I fish. Except when I fish from shore at night, then I carry a fixed blade on my belt. It makes me feel a little more comfortable to have something bigger and more obvious when I'm out on my own.

To this day, I believe that having this knife visible and very obvious got me out of a potentially dangerous situtiation when fishing of a public launch at night.

I dont know about it being big, but the blad on the one I have is probably 3.5 inches. I mainly take it if I need to cut the braid, the anchor line in my kayak. I have hands like Chuck Norris, so in a security matter, I would drop the knife and hi-ya chop the attacker in the throat.

I carry a Mora Frost carbon clipper on my hip. 3.5" blade length and like 8" or some odd number in total length. It can be used for anything imaginable.

Now when you are saying big knife I've seen a few people with like $200 8" blade length fixed combat knives for the sole purpose of just cutting fishing line. Those guys are just on the shore making themselves look like dumb ***** IMO. The mall ninjas of the knife world.

Yeah, I saw someone carrying a kabar utility knife. That's like 7" blade I believe, and never took it out to use it. He had a small multi tool in the pocket for whatever.

Always have a knife or two on me. What have I used them for...

1. cutting an anchor line I pulled up with my line.

2. cleaning trout in the stream

3. security (never had to pull it but my handgun took this role now).

4. cutting fishing line wrapped around my TM

5. cutting up trash pulled out of the lake so I can fit it into a bucket.

I am sure everyone has a million things they had to use it for. Just a tool with about 7 million uses. The times i have not had a knife, i have regretted it.

Have a hunting knife in the boat at all times. Never know when you will need to cut a gill net or trotline that reaches out and grabs the prop.

I also carry a large folding knife(Two blade). One blade is built like a small crosscut saw. Handy to cut a limb or two away from a bed or saw your way into another area.

I'm a knife collecting nut, I've got close to 50. The focus of my collection is tactical auto's. If I leave the house without a switchblade in my pocket, it's probably 'cause I'm not wearing any pants. I've been carrying them a very long time, never had to pull one out in anger or had to use one for self defense. My current carry is a Benchmade Auto Axis 5000. A great fishing and boating knife.

For fifteen years I worked in a meat packing plant, standing in blood and animal parts all day, 40 other guys around you all with very sharp knives in their hands . You learn real fast how to control your emotions and get along with your co-workers.

During those years I did manage to see a few knife fights. It's amazing how much blood can come out of a human being and they can still live.

I always have a knife on me, not just when I'm fishing. There are a ton of uses for a knife, I'd say i use mine at least once a day. The self defense factor is another good reason too carry one. Some places I fish have a lot of drunk people and tweakers that like to mess with people, especially teenagers like me. I've only had to take it out in warning thankfully.
