So my nephew when play fighting likes to lower his head and ram you in the gut with it.  Well he tried this on some kid the other day and the kid got smart, moved, and he ramed the corner of the computer desk instead.  After two and a half hours waiting in the ER, the nurse came in, squeezed the cut together, "click click", your good to go, see ya in a week to have them removed.  Anyone ever had these instead of stitches?  I was wondering about the pain factor?  They did not give him novacane (sp?) but some topical numbing stuff.  He felt it and it seemed like it hurt, but he didn't shed a tear.  I have had stitches once, don't remember anything, too drunk back then, another time I needed them but asked the doc if there were any other options so he used "superglue" for skin, worked great.  Anyway here is a shot of "staplehead"   ;D

My son got 4 staples in the back of his head. For some reason he thought it would be a good idea to sit in a cloths basket with a beach ball, as he tried to get in with it he tipped over and hit his head on the corner of the wall. I didn't know head wounds bled so much so I kind of freaked out but he was totally cool and tried to get back in the basket. so much for learning :D

he just turned 4 btw.

Glad it wasn't worse!  I must be old school... I prefer stitches.  ...lol

They used staples on my sons head. Less traumatic for a kid, faster, easier. The person doing it doesn't need much skill, just pull the trigger. Easier on the parents too, out of the ER in a few minutes instead of waiting to have them shave his head, etc etc...

I broke me femur also and had some staples. I think I had six at my hip and 4 above my knee. I don't remember them hurting and I actually got to take some out at the doctors office which was kind of cool.

I had 13 staples in my back after my surgery a few years ago. They are easier to care for than stitches and come out almost painless. I remember having stitches as a kid and the removal was horrid but the staples are simple. The doctor actually told us that we could remove them at home with a sterilzed set needlenose if we couldn't make the appointment and to just keep it clean. At the office it took all of about 30 seconds to remove them, didn't feel a thing.

There 's no such thing as "old school" there 's a reason for using either, stitches are for surfaces not subject to too much tension, staples are for places subject to tension, cyanoacrilate ( "super glue" and more accurately Dermabond ) is for places whith very little tension and particularily for places where the cosmetic importance is great ( like the face skin ).

Of course, ya 'll know I 'm a vet, no, we do not use staples in small animals, we use stitches designed to work like like a staple.
