SDoolittle Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 I filed 2008 and 2009 this year because I was deployed last year. I've already received the 2009 return, but still waiting on 2008. Quote

Super User burleytog Posted April 22, 2010 Super User Posted April 22, 2010 A refund isn't the same as a return. You file a return, you receive a refund. Yet another of my 1001 pet peeves. Quote

Incorrect usage of moot (most typically expressed as 'mute'). Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 23, 2010 Super User Posted April 23, 2010 Better to owe than to get a refund. Owing only means you have not paid enough withholding or quarterly estimates, but have been able to earn some interest before filing. The IRS does not pay any interest on monies paid up front in the form of your weekly withholding. Quote
moby bass Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Ideally one should owe a few bucks. Being self employed, I not only owe tax but the whole 15% self employment tax as well. That is a killer. > Quote

That is a killer. > You can do a deduction on your 15% self employment tax. 50% of it. I do that. But remember, I'm only deducting that 50% of the tax from my total income. All I'm really saving is the income tax on 50% of the self employment tax, not 50% of the tax itself. Its a gotcha. Quote
