I've come to an earth-shaking conclusion.

The public school system in the US has failed. People can't spell or construct a basic sentence.

I am amazed by the number of people who struggle to spell even basic words.

lol, it would be the ideal situation for Muphry's Law wouldn't it?

I used to think that people had two typing personalities; formal, and informal and that on forums people used the informal typing personality because they just didn't care. Now I've come to believe that sometimes this isn't the case because the spelling, grammatical, and syntactic errors are so egregious that they would actually require more work to put into text than the formal, correct version.

It seems to have reached an all time high lately.

Sure, your presumption may perhaps be accurate, but this has always been true about the American education system. The reality is that the American government has the ability to create an exemplary education system, similar to our European friends across the pond, but the American government choses to keep their citizens handily ignorant, as to keep them away from revolting. This is not an ill-considered theory, but a fact, and it would not be good if everyone went to college. I for one am an example of how our public education system works, and can initiate a college education enabling one to succeed in the world. Unfortunately, many people think the system is unfair and that only "rich" people can go to college, neglecting the fact that no matter your financial or social situation, all can go to college. It is only a matter of ambition and paperwork. Paperwork for applications, registration, financial aid, loans, transcripts, and resumes, leads many to b/s their way into saying that it was out of the question. Oh yeah, and on the internet people do not use proper grammar, and don't need to.

Here's an interesting thought for your consideration.

Education is universally touted as the solution to all of our problems.  Perhaps it is.  But, then again, are not most of our elected "leadership" college educated, many with graduate degrees?  How many of those "in charge" are high school drop outs?

Which is really more important, edumacation, or common sense?

and when you're a drooling old fart wearing depends these kids will be in positions of responsibility... think about it.. they'll be typing out your prescription label for the pills that keep your butt from leaking,  typing out the Social Security letter that explains why your benefits are getting cut if you don't respond soon enough,  typing out the directions on how to plug your electric car in correctly so you don't blow the house up...

scary thoughts...  :o

ArcticCat500, the difference is that your paragraph is, for the most part, structured correctly. You also have your capitalization in the right place, don't have words running into each other, and your using punctuation correctly. Commas and semi colons are my problem, I am never fully sure where to break up sentence.

Everybody has their own level of education and I, for the most part, don't normally judge others in the literacy department. Sometimes it can be an almighty trial, but who am I to pick apart someone's education or learning ability.

It's usually pretty evident who doesn't take the time to get it right and who is doing their best. In the end, trying is what counts. Granted, this isn't an English class forum, but challenging others to try is only going to help them.

FF15, fully understandable, but the original post was targeted towards spelling issues.  And I'll bet 99.9% of the people that read my post, read it without issues.

It's cool.  I read pretty much the same thing that you posted a couple of years ago and it was an eye opener as to how our brains work. 8-)

It depends on the post. If I'm just making a short reply to a question or making a short comment I don't use periods or any other punctuation But if I'm asking a long question then I"ll try to write correctly so that people understand me.

There is no excuse for bad spelling when you have spell check!!!

I agree 100% with Burley; people have lost any pride and/or care in public presentations of themselves. However, it did take Burley 12 years to figure out the spelling/grammar in forums was isht, so whose education is worse? :-/ :-/
