Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 29, 2010 Super User Posted March 29, 2010 Golf is no fun. That's why I took up archery. Lots more fun to shoot your target. Quote

Super User burleytog Posted March 29, 2010 Super User Posted March 29, 2010 Should have bought Ping. They're the Shimano of the golf world. Quote
TeamDaiwaRick Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 from 799 down to 299....what a good deal Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 29, 2010 Super User Posted March 29, 2010 I have owned at least 20 sets of irons over the last 20 years, have 4 in the garage right now, golfers are always looking for the edge. I have owned several sets of Pings, Callaways, Tommy Armour, Lynx, Zevo and custom just to name a few, blades, perimeter weighted, mid and oversize, steel and graphite you name it.....lol. I always thought the Ping Eye 2 was the easiest club I ever hit, I liked them, but no better than some others I have had I go back to my Callaway S2H2 with a memphis 10 shaft every time that I bought back in 1988, best and longest I have owned but long irons can be difficult to hit. It boils down to personal preference, you can't buy a swing. Wish you well with the Callaways, I'm sure you will love them. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted March 29, 2010 Super User Posted March 29, 2010 Personal attacks are verboten ! Not a brag merely pointing out that ping is not the shimano of golf clubs as was stated in another post, it isn't what you hit but how you hit it. Just saying golfers are always looking for that magic bullet........it doesn't exist. In modern day golf, Tiger plays Nike, I'm sure he would have faired just as well using Ping or Callaway. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Well you're right that there's no golf club that will make you play well if you don't have game to begin with, just like there's no fishing rod/reel that will make you catch fish if you aren't a good fisherman to begin with. Quote
Skunked in DR Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 So that's what I'm doing wrong. And BB - congrats on your new sticks Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 29, 2010 Super User Posted March 29, 2010 If different clubs didn't help your game, there wouldn't be as many clubs on the market. If everyone had to play blades, there wouldn't be nearly as many people playing golf now. The perimeter-weighted cavity back iron is responsible for a lot of sub-10 handicaps. Bigger drivers, better fairway woods, hybrid clubs, heel-toe weighted putters. They're all responsible for improved play. No, they aren't capable of fixing swing flaws, but they sure help minimize the effects of those flaws. Golf & fishing are apples and oranges WRT to equipment. Quote

Super User Bassn Blvd Posted March 30, 2010 Author Super User Posted March 30, 2010 I had a set of Tommy Armor Silver Scotts until my son gat ahold of them. He also lostmy Yonix driver > These Callaways are the models from 2 yrs ago but nothing has really changed to make them any worse than the 2010 model. They are the flex steel shaft which might help my game. We'll see come Thursday morning when I play nine holes for the first time in years. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Should have bought Ping. They're the Shimano of the golf world. Maybe 10 years ago. But he should have gone with Titleist. Quote
basskatcher() Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I bought some expenstive golf clubs, only used them a couple of times and gave up. Quote

Lots of money in golf equipment and most manufacturers are on the bandwagon with a full range of clubs and balls. I don't say any one brand is better than another, just what's fits your style and feels comfortable, even clones are well made. Sub 10 handicaps, it's the age of technology, way different in the 50's & 60's. Drivers, 43" persimmon head vs Ti head on a 45 or 46" shaft= longer drives. Blades vs cavity back, cavs way easier to hit and your irons are stronger your modern 9 iron is more like a 7 or 8 iron, more control especially with square grooves still legal for recreational golf. Blades are better for working the ball, but today is a power game with less people "playing shots". Hybrids, toss out those 2-3-4 irons, you don't need them today, when first introduced they were called " rescue clubs". The ball is real hot today compared to the old balata( mine all had smiles in them when I first learned). I think the technology is great, who doesn't want to play better? My scores are still pretty decent compared to 30 years ago, my skills have diminished and I'm not nearly as strong but having as much fun. I'm sure if I pulled out my Macgregor xp270's I bought in 1960 I'd embarrass myself on the course. Quote

No, they aren't capable of fixing swing flaws, but they sure help minimize the effects of those flaws. Golf & fishing are apples and oranges WRT to equipment. The thing is, there are a lot of recreational golfers (I know many) who put too much emphasis on the equipment and not enough time on the range or practice green. They think a new putter will make them putt better, or a new driver will make them hit all the fairways. They continue to buy the newest equipment as it comes out, continually in self-denial, and see no improvement in their game. When it comes to the newest equipment, all high-end equipment is more or less the same. It comes down to preference. That's not to say there isn't a huge difference between blades and cavity backs, or between drivers of the past and modern day drivers. There is. But when you compare the high end cavity backs to each other, there isn't that big of a difference. Same with the blades. Bassn' - Callaways are some of the most forgiving clubs out there, so I think you made a great purchase, especially at that price. Quote
