BassThumb Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 What really bothers me is the fact that they mailed every household a letter informing all of us the the census form was on the way.How many households are there in the US? 100 million? What did that cost; postage, printing, envelopes, envelope stuffing, etc? Had to be a couple of hundred million just to send out a form saying a form is being sent out. I say we should find out who's idea that was, and petition to get that dumb-*** fired. Haha, good point. Way to "Go Green!" Quote
BassThumb Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Just curious, did you get your census forms yet? And if you did, are you answering all the questions, specifically name and birth date of your children. Just asking. I answer all the questions, but I don't list my phone #. Quote
vanquish Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Anybody know what legal action they can take if you don't fill it out? Were the letters tracked with proof of delivery when they were put in your mailbox? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2010 Super User Posted March 18, 2010 I guess you don't care about accurate voting districts, schools, police, fire dept., sanitation, or other services then? Quote

moby bass Posted March 18, 2010 Author Posted March 18, 2010 I have no problem with being counted and will be more than happy to answer "yo" or "here' when my name is called. But the instructions say that the information can't be used by any other agency, so why do you need my child's birthday and name. The fact that she or he is a child and x years old should be enough. I have nothing to hide, just don't want to volunteer information. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted March 18, 2010 Super User Posted March 18, 2010 We were sent the long form for the last census. I filled it out the same way I fill out any other census; the number of people living in my house. That's it. A few weeks later a census worker shows up at my house and proceeds to try and intimidate me into giving more information. He left with the same amount of information he arrived with, which was the number of people living in my house. He wasted a trip. I was not arrested, audited, fined, tortured, interrogated or anything of the sort. Never heard from them again. Quote

If the form simply asked how many people and what ages were living in the house I would have no problems it but that is not the case. Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 19, 2010 Super User Posted March 19, 2010 Here's an example of beaurocratic stupidity. When we were at the Daytona races, the Census Bureau had an "informational trailer" on the midway. On it was this question. Why is it important to list the number of children attending school. Answer: because it ensures you get your fair share of government funding. Do any of you really believe that each and every public school does not have a head count of the number of students in their school? Give me a break! We have representatives who represent districts and states. If they are not aware of the particular needs of their bailiwicks, they need to be replaced. All the extraneous stuff is just garbage. The Constitution requires the "enumeration" of the people to determine the apportionment of the house. Nothing more. Nothing less. Government is like a cancer. It is a living, breathing, growing organism, taking an ever larger chunk of the available resources to feed itself. In many cases, like a cancer, it serves no purpose other than to ensure its own survival at the expense of necessary cells that actually perform functions necessary to life in the human body. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted March 19, 2010 Super User Posted March 19, 2010 Just a random thought..... How many people do you know that complain about intrusive government surveys, and then leave the forum they are on to update their MySpace/Facebook accounts? Quote

I don't understand what the big deal is about this question. As I said earlier, I didn't even look at the form so I don't know if there are other questions that are strange, but getting worked up about this one doesn't make any sense to me. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 19, 2010 Super User Posted March 19, 2010 Does the Census ask for anymore information than the IRS? What's the big deal? If "they" were really out to get ya, 99.9% of your information is already in "their" hands. : Quote
moby bass Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 It's not a big deal, I was just curious as to how others were answering the questions. I know I already give all that info to the gov't, but I wouldn't be if I wasn't forced to do it. Just call it a general distrust of gov't. I personally don't like it when I call and order a pizza and my name, address, phone number and waist size all pops up on their computer. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted March 19, 2010 Super User Posted March 19, 2010 Seriously. If the government wanted to do something with your information, it can get it without even asking you for it. Quote

People that are concerned with government plots really need to watch C-SPAN for a half hour or so. Its will be pretty apparent that they are completely incapable of some complicated plot to steal your children. Quote

And if that is all the feds relied on to set their funding targets then many public schools would "magically" begin to grow rapidly as their "head count" numbers were not being checked. Quote

I don't have a problem with the government getting accurate head counts and demographics. The Super Bowl and a other media adds, and the pre-census mailings confuse and anger me. What are they thinking? Quote
