As of about an 1 1/2 ago I am now the co-owner of a 60,000 sq ft. greenhouse with 10 trucks running wholesale routes in 7 mid-west states. Woohoo!!! It has been a hell of a ride the last few weeks and I would like to thank Kelley (Triton21) for all his support; he's been there for me on an almost daily basis being my go to guy when the chips were down. Right now I am sitting here trying to figure out how to act.

This is why I will not make the road trip this year. It was either be broke and out of a job or find the money to buy the business and get busy. Thanks for letting me spout and thanks again Kelley for being such a good friend!

Congratulations. Most of us settle for working for someone else. I never had the guts to take the shot. Good for you. I wish you great success. Remember us little people when you make the big time. 8-)

Way to go Brian!!!!

A new chapter begins in your life, ENJOY.  Remember to take a little time for YOU!

It was great to talk to you last week, don't be a stranger (well you're from the north, that's strange in itself)!!!    :D

That's awesome Brian !!! Glad it worked out for you.

I was a business owner for 12 years and am again now, so I have a lecture I will give you someday!  ;D

BTW do you grow reefer in the greenhouse or what ??  ;D

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.  And K_Mac, if it wouldn't have been for Kelley telling me I could I probably wouldn't have. ;D

Gregg, you don't know how true to life that statement is!  Last year before I started there the local PD got a tip that they were doing just that.  There was a search warrant with dogs and the whole smack!  No evidence found. ;)

You give me too much credit Brian.  Glad you took the plunge.  I never knew anyone getting rich working for someone else.  Going to miss you at pickwick.  Maybe we can make the WI gathering.

I wish you well in your new endeavor, no guts no glory.

I started up my business during a recession in the 70's and IMO there is no better time, attrition is on your side, especially as you have bought a business that is already up and running.

Congratulations.  Sticking your neck out there and doing it yourself is best feeling in the world, as well as the scariest.

I wish you nothing but success.  :)

Best wishes in your endeavor.  I have a good friend who farms in nearby Portsmouth, RI, has a fruit and vegetable stand, and several green houses.  He does not approach an acre and a half's worth or green houses, but he does very well.

But, like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it.  He does sell some of his greenhouse product at market, but most of it at retail through the stand.

It's like having a baby.  You have to practice constant vigilance.  Alarms if the greenhouse gets too cool or too hot, or if some system fails.

Like all other farming, there is always something to do.  Depending on the type of operation, there is usually a break in the action where you can take some time for yourself.

The potential is there.  Here's hoping it all works well for you.

Congrats and good luck Brian. There is nothing like hard work performed for personal gain versus gain for working hard for someone else. Different problems but better rewards. Glad you had the courage to take the plunge. We will miss you at Pickwick but I am sure that time of the year your business will need you.

Many thanks to everyone. :)  I don't know if you can tell, but I'm really keyed up on this one.  I"m gonna try and make it down there for a couple of days if possible, just don't see it happening.

Burley: I'll deliver in person if I can.

Robert: scary hasn't been the word, it's been a shaky path for the last couple of months.

FishingRhino: The power has been taken out 4 times since the beginning of winter, 3 times the temps were sub-zero and the cause was the same hi-line pole getting hit and snapped off.  It's the end of the line so I am gonna work on the utility company and see if they will bury it back to the previous pole. ;)

Good luck!!!!!

Remember,

You already have what it takes to succeed:

A positive attitude, a work ethic, and the will to make it work. Take those and kick butt!!!!!

Congrats

Brian, I dropped out of the corporate world and started my own business about twelve years ago.  It seems like yesterday.  I wish you nothing but success and freedom from the nightmare of "How am I going to make payroll this week?"  Been there.  Done that.  Still doing it.  Never a dull moment.  Good Luck, my friend.
