little_stephen Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 This is an honest request for help, Im taking on a new role at work, And I want to do some research on "Social Tribes" and how they interact and how my company can put the willingness of these groups to work to help others! The company I work for is one of the best contact and service centers in the industry for the Blood Bank Industry. We contact, recruit, schedule, and assist Blood Banks from all over the country. Given the recent crisis with the severe winter weather in the East, weve been faced with an interesting problem, we are literally, THOUSANDS of units of blood short to support some MAJOR communities in our country........ Just to name a few without tying up the clients names, Houston, Tx. Chicago IL. Pittsburgh, PA. & Cleveland, OH. Just to name a few of those places..... Ive told you all this, because I think that as a "Tribe" (Or social group) Fishermen are a great group of people who go out of their way to help others and make a positive impact on their communities! So, I was wondering if you are reading this. If you could just post to let me know if you: 1. Are Currently A Blood Donor. 2. Would Consider Donating Blood If You Were Asked 3. Would Donate Blood If The Opportunity Was Given To You At An Event You Attended (Fishing Expo, Tournament, If A Fishing Club Sponsored A Drive, Ect.) 4. If There Were Something To Gain From It (Example, If A Major Fishing Tackle Company Teamed Up And Gave Out A Free Pack Of Baits Per Donor, Or Raffled Off A Bass Boat, Or Something?!) Thanks for the feedback......... I promise that Im doing this simply because Im trying to get a feel for if as a community fishermen are open to the idea of helping save lives by donating blood! And if you get the chance to donate, please do so! Alot of our countries blood supply is in the hands of the American Red Cross, ALOT of that blood will go to Hati, with the weather turning for the worst again, it means that our country is in need of average people, like you, to help your friends in your community! Thanks for reading! Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 I have never donated blood. I would if I was asked and would not need to be compensated. Good luck with your project! Quote

I would consider it, yes. 3. Probably 4. Yes, but only if it was also at the event I was already attending. Quote
NewAngler Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 1.Yes. 2. Yes. 3. Yes. 4. Yes, but I would donate regardless of gift. The juice and cookies are enough for me! Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Any time you offer a prize or reward to someone for a service, you will get much more of that service. I think offering entry to a raffle, or a free pack of baits, to anyone who donates blood at a fishing expo is a good idea. However, I would also make sure that there isn't any alcohol available at the expo, or at whatever event you're considering doing this. Quote
zero limit Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 My wife does every 3 months or so and she has gotten free movie tickets, gas cards and other stuff, but she would do it anyway. I have never given blood because of what the hospitials charge/profit off what should be FREE BLOOD. HUNDERDS OF DOLLARS FOR A PINT. OF WHAT WAS FREE TO THEM Quote
tyrius. Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 yes to all. I haven't given in a while, but have been too busy. This post has reminded me to setup my next donation. To the poster above, the blood is NOT free to the hospital. The phlebotimists who take your blood are paid, the supplies are expensive, the office space or vehicles used by the organization taking the donations aren't cheap. Then you have to test the blood, store it, transport it to the hospital. Then the hospital has to store it and administer it. All of this has to be done in a controlled manner to ensure that the blood remains good and the people who do each step are paid for their time. Quote
little_stephen Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 I have never given blood because of what the hospitials charge/profit off what should be FREE BLOOD. HUNDERDS OF DOLLARS FOR A PINT. OF WHAT WAS FREE TO THEM when i say this, i am in no way trying to argue. just wanted you to know why. They legally arent allowed to profit from a unit of blood. thats %100 all the cost of maintaining, collecting, storing, processing, and handling the blood. It costs money to run blood centers, which are alot of times seperately run (By non-profits)..... but the blood center has to charge the hospital to stay open. The hospital then has to pay their staff to use the blood, ect. Each time u pay for a unit of blood, youre paying for an entire chain of things....... The Person who called to schedule the donor, the person who took the blood, the bills for the blood center, the storage costs and testing costs, the lab tech at the hospital, the nurse administering the blood, ect..... So it is really, no where near free to them. Geting Blood Donors to come in, its an expensive biz. Sadly, most people wont give blood without something for them! Usually Tshirts. The problem comes when ever a hospital has a severe operational issue......... sometimes its poor managment, sometimes it just a REAL lack of staff, equipment, or both. And thats why the cost goes up. But if theyre profiting from the blood, its blunt wrong. And legally, theyre walking an EXTREMELY fine line. Quote
little_stephen Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 BTW. Zero Limit, and tyrius. I noticed you both live in the chicago area....... Lives in your community are now "My" responsibility..... lol as of today, pen went to paper, and the Contact Center I work at signed on Lifesource Blood Services, Chicagolands largest Blood Bank, and sister Org. to the Central Blood Bank out of Pittsburgh, PA (Already one of our clients) So, soon, very soon, it'll be part of my job to take care of making sure we can save people in your area when they need blood! Im excited...... Sorry if I call you. lol ;D Quote
little_stephen Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 yes to all. I haven't given in a while, but have been too busy. This post has reminded me to setup my next donation. THATS AWESOME! Do you donate with Lifesource?! And im really happy to see that youre going to keep donating...... And btw. u really know your stuff! a little too much infact?! know someone who works at a blood center?! or were u just a long time donor!? Quote
tyrius. Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 THATS AWESOME! Do you donate with Lifesource?! Used to donate at Lifesource, but since I moved Heartland Blood center is much closer so I go there. And btw. u really know your stuff! a little too much infact?! know someone who works at a blood center?! or were u just a long time donor!? Wife's a nurse and I've also donated quite a few times. Most of what I wrote is just a result of thinking about the process logically. Nothing's really free. Quote
Luke at Gouldsboro Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I would donate blood, but I can't because I'm on coumadin and I get blood drawn every week. I don't think you should have to offer a "gift" for people to donate. Maybe a poster of someone who is sick and needs blood. Visual tactics usually work pretty well for marketing, or in you're case blood donations. Quote
OIFBasser Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I used to, but the whole tattoo, and traveling to third world countries rules put an end to that. Quote
zero limit Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I used to, but the whole tattoo, and traveling to third world countries rules put an end to that. They wont take your blood if you have a tattoo? Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 I used to, but the whole tattoo, and traveling to third world countries rules put an end to that. They wont take your blood if you have a tattoo? Yes and no. Probably not if the tattoo is recent or a homemade or a prison tattoo. Most, if not all, legitimate tattoo artists use disposable one time use needles these days. I have tattoos ( over twenty years old) and they take my blood. Quote
uicdent11 Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 Given blood probably 5 times in the last 8 years. The blood bank in Milwaukee was right by my school and they found out I was O positive. Lets just say I got a call "often". Our school does a blood drive in Chicago for the UIC medical center at least once a year and I have donated to them twice. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 21, 2010 Super User Posted February 21, 2010 I did it once.....let's just say it was a bad experience and i never did it again. Don't let an understaffed unexperienced blood staff member take your blood. I remember when i was in High school and they came trying to get Blood from the kids.A few of us did it just to get out of class that day.... ;D I wqould have been better off staying in class to be honest. :-/ Quote
