baboosicbass08 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 So first off I apologize, I know I have seen threads like this before but I tried a couple searches and couldn't find them...So my laptops been really acting up the past few days and I was wondering if any of you know of any good anti virus programs preferably free and any with virus removal tools as well? Thanks in advance. -Dave Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 13, 2010 Super User Posted February 13, 2010 Take it from me and invest in a good one. Those free ones aren't worth crap or their weight. They are missing too many programs you should have as if you were paying for one. When i got hit by that virus i had AVG and A square spyware(both free)...neither of them caught it. Took my computer to the computer repair place and was told my computer was LOADED with viruses. They recommended Norton for my price range and said Norton has really improved over the years...Because i hated Norton when i first had it. So far since reinstalling Norton again I have had ZERO problems. Quote
TrippyJai Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 Buy the Symantec AntiVirus software and update it every few weeks. I have never had a virus on my computer since I bought it. Also try to always use firefox and update it to the latest versions as well. Then get Spyware Doctor and remove all those bad cookies that are on your computer. Usually if you are hit with a spyware or virus, it's pretty hard to remove them depending on the severity. Since your going to spend money to fix your computer when your infected, might as well spend the money on these softwares now. Quote
Hoover Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 ESET Nod 32. Recommended by Leo Laport, the tech guy. Takes little computer resources. Excellent product. Enough said. Quote
Kenny418 Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 avast! X2. It is one of those free ones everyone says doesnt work. It works great and I know a lot of computer techs that swear by it. Quote
VolFan Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 I have Webroot Antivirus. It's a cmpany out of Boulder, CO that I used to have profoessional contact with when I lived there. It costs $20-40 for up to three computers. Loads fast, they have great online help, they'll backup your system, and they will access you computer remotely if needed to help you fix whatever is fragged. It's a great product and it loads fast. Super User Dan: Posted February 14, 2010 Super User Posted February 14, 2010 BUY ONE. The progs you buy are better than the free ones, no matter what anyone says. If you're careful a free one will probably be ok, but you're really better off if you just pay for one. ESET NOD32 Bitdefender TrendMicro PC-Cillin Kaspersky Antivirus All are highly rated. NOD32 uses the least system memory as far as I've seen, but it's also the most expensive. I have Bitdefender. I got 3 separate licenses that last for 2 years for $35 Quote

Super User Long Mike Posted February 14, 2010 Super User Posted February 14, 2010 avast! X2. It is one of those free ones everyone says doesnt work. Avast even picked up a Trojan Horse that someone on this forum was trying to plant. I alerted Glenn and the rest is history. Avast updates itself several times a day. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted February 14, 2010 Super User Posted February 14, 2010 Norton, about 60 bucks for the year. Also, download spybot and run that every couple of weeks. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 14, 2010 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 14, 2010 TrendMicro PC-Cillin Also note that cookies are NOT harmful to your computer. It's a total myth. They're really not bad at all, actually. In fact, you couldn't log onto this forum without them. Same goes for online banking, eBay, PayPal, etc. etc. etc. I can't remember the last time I cleared my cookies. It's just a non-issue. Much ado about nothing. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted February 14, 2010 Super User Posted February 14, 2010 I really like the Norton 360. It has some nice features and is much more user friendly than it used to be. It does use more resources than some, but it is not a problem for any newer computer. Quote

Is it really 'techy', or is it more user friendly? Apparently it used to be techy, but the newer versions that I used were not. I don't think it was any less user friendly than Norton or McAfee but I'm more of an intermediate/advanced user so I couldn't say exactly how a beginner would see it. You can download a trial to check it out. DO NOT INSTALL IT UNTIL YOU UNINSTALL OTHER ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS. It doesn't like when other A/V programs run at the same time. Also, if you get rid of it, make sure to uninstall it before you install a different A/V program. Quote

Man I can't stand clowns like that ( the ones planting Trojans ). Glenn should have given the person an all expense paid trip the the BR roadtrip ( one way ticket of course). He then should have done a bulk buy on large trebel hooks and handed them out to everyone but that person. Let's just say their trojan planting days would come to an abrupt end! If they don't have already, they should have laws for this. I have always said that they need to string these people up by their %^$&^%$ and put them on public display! Quote

Agreed! Used to use Norton, but it let me down twice. Once at work, once on my daughter's laptop. IT guy at work suggested MS Security Essentials (free download) and Malware bytes (free download) and I've never looked back. Quote
whoopbazz Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I just got cyberdefender...it's inexpensinve and was ranked #1 in many publications. I had trouble installing it and called the tech number...got a real person, quickly, and led me step by step to get the job done. I also paid extra for one month of premeir service, cause I had a deep down bug' and they logged on to my computer and worked for about an hour and go ti tall straightened out. Good product and first class service and tech support. Quote
