Super User Gone_Phishin Posted February 8, 2010 Super User Posted February 8, 2010 Have you seen ma weina? Quote
FL Knifemaker Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 We've had people get jacked up at some of our local boatramps in the early morning and late evening. I carry all the time anyway so packing while fishing is nothing any different. Better to have it and not need it Quote
Super User grimlin Posted February 8, 2010 Super User Posted February 8, 2010 I think the whole point of this thread is crime can happen anywhere and anytime. If somebody choose to carry legally for their protection it's their choice and right.I see no problem with it. I fish some shady shady neighborhoods and I've yet to seen anything bad or anything bad has ever happened to me there neither. Then I've fish some very nice lakes with added security and i still hear of people's stuff getting stolen. So how can you determine what's safe and what's not anymore? :-/ Quote

So how can you determine what's safe and what's not anymore? :-/ Yeah, that is the point with the ramp I an talking about as well. I have fished there for a while, a LOT of folks do. Talking to the Sheriff (Who I have frequently chatted with on the issue), he said while there have been complaints and the occasional fight, and vehicle break-in there have not been truly violent or armed robberies there to date. I think chances are I would not need it but I'd rather be prepared in case I happen to get lucky and be there on the day someone gets a real bad idea. Quote
FL Knifemaker Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 I often talk with the guys from the local PD and Sheriffs Dpt. They tell me that vehicle break ins and small time robberies are up considerably. People are more desparate these days. I'll be paying more attention to where I park my rig this season. Quote

This is a great post imo. With the bad economy we should all be a little extra careful on what we leave in our boat and where we leave it. I'll still be packin. 8-) Quote
RyneB Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Not a fishing story. But i have a friend who was playing AA minor league baseball. Two of his teamates went bowling one night. One of the kids always carried a small handgun, but the other kid hated guns and refused to let the kid carry. As the two kids were walking out of the bowling alley they were jumped by 4 guys who were "shedding blood" to become a member of a street gang. One of the kids was stabbed to death and the other was stabbed 26 times and lived, but now lives his life in a wheel chair. When you wake up you have to decided if you want to be a victim or not. I live in Illinois so i have no right to defend myself unless it is with my hands, even though the criminals have weapons. Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 8, 2010 Super User Posted February 8, 2010 For those of you that don't want to carry a gun but want some protection, I suggest a trained muskrat. Quote
FL Knifemaker Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 For those of you that don't want to carry a gun but want some protection, I suggest a trained muskrat. Since I don't work a regular job, I sometimes go into the swamp on monday mornings to pick up my friends stray hog dogs. Nothing is more intimidating than an airboat full of pitbulls and American bulldogs when I get to the boat ramp. They all behave and love people but the first reaction for many is to run ;D After spending a night in the swamp, all they want to do is go home and eat so getting them into the truck isn't very hard. Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 9, 2010 Super User Posted February 9, 2010 I'm more likely to spot bigfoot than obtain a CCW in the state of California. If I had a CCW, I'd carry. Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted February 9, 2010 Super User Posted February 9, 2010 Kind of an interesting thread, but here's my question. If you go to a place that's known to have hooligans and thugs, launch your boat and go fishing, who's around to protect your vehicle, trailer, and whatever property is in them. They certainly won't hesitate to break in and see what they can find, and if they don't find anything, they may trash your vehicle just for sport, or because they are angry at finding nothing. I see no logic whatever in going to such places. Quote
swilly78 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I think there should be a hooligan and thug season... Quote

The problem is, even at the busiest boat ramp in Florida (Camp Mack), someone tried to pry my truck door open in broad daylight. It can happen anywhere Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 It can happen even at private lakes an ramps. Quote
FL Knifemaker Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 carry a conceled colt 45. Malt Liquor or shootin' iron?? ;D Quote
Carrington Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 the best concealed weapon ive seen latly is a glock 22. alot of power for its size. Quote

Although I have a 21 and 36, I prefer the 1911 based guns. Here's a "Munchkin Blaster" that Gunsmith, Dave Erikson posted on our knife and gun forum a while back. IMHO, it's the perfect concealed carry 1911 based .45 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Nice 45 Springfield FL. I've got the champion 4" in that version. Not quite as fancy but still a shooter. Quote

Ya.......besides Colts, Springers are the favored platform for the custom guys to build on. I have two older modded Para P14's that are my main shooters. I also shoot CZ 97B's converted to single action. Quote

I have two older modded Para P14's that are my main shooters. I also shoot CZ 97B's converted to single action. Some years ago I had a Para P14 made in Canada. I liked it, but never really loved it. It had some failure-to-feed issues and sometimes the slide failed to lock back on en ampty magazine. It was accurate. I ended up selling it. Never went back to Para. I have fallen in love with CZ. CZs are among the least well known great pistols on the market. I have a CZ83 .380 which is not only extremely well built, it's exceptiopnally accurate. I rate it a better pistol than the Walther PPK/S and two Beretta Cheetahs I've owned. I also have a CZ75 Compact in 9mm which I carry quite a bit. With the steel frame, recoil is negligible. It's been 100% reliable and is uper accurate. The Czechs build very good guns, indeed. The CZ97B (possibly CZ97BD) is on my very short-list to buy. Quote
