done Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 Jeez, you guys carrying on the roadtrip here? I don't own a gun, and i wouldn't really care, but some people might shy away if they knew everyone there would have a gun on them. I understand some folks apprehension but you got to consider. IF you are fishing with a responsible person, I personally would feel more comfortable knowing he is carrying. I guess a show of how discreet and responsible a lot of guys are, you have not noticed before. I mean for me, the gun does NOT under any circumstances come out of the holster except as an absolute last resort and then ONLY to protect life. I love my boat, really I do but I would value even a thugs life higher than my boat so I would never shoot someone for property. Now come after me, my buds, or my family, or heck an innocent bystander, I will step up and protect their lives over the thug at that point. Quote
VAfishin4me Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I'd like to think everyone on this site is responsible, but with people like the_Natural, I can imagine many people might feel uncomfortable with the idea of so many guys carrying loaded guns, even if they have a permit. Quote
done Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 ..and really at the roadshow you may not have that many. Depends on the states. NC has a number of states who recognize our permits so we recognize theirs. IF any state you go through for the roadshow does not recognize your states permit, it would be illegal to carry. Quote
Bassnajr Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 "In accordance with Chapter 44, Title 18, Section 926C of The United States Code: Basically says that law enforcement and retired law enforcement officers can carry a concealed firearm as long as they are in good standing or retired in good standing, and qualify with an NRA certified range officer every 12 months. I know there are many LEOs and retired LEOs on this site. Here in Rhode Island, we used to have to get a State pistol permit to carry. Now with this federal law, all that has changed... Bout time!!! spropro Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I too am considering the same thing. Like term life insurance you hope that it is never used, but if you find yourself alone, isolated and confronting someone who means to do you harm you want it (gun) there with you. Occasionally I hit one of the streams in the Blue Ridge with my 13 year old daughter and have pondered what I would do if someone meant to do us harm Quote
simplejoe Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Have gun will travel. x2, Like I said earlier mine's on me 24/7. Andy, stayed in my Hotel room last year and he never even knew I had it. Is that concealed enough? Quote
Super User Micro Posted February 4, 2010 Super User Posted February 4, 2010 Sometimes I do, other times not. Depends on how I'm feeling. When I do I either open carry, or carry the gun in my bag. I never carry concealed on my person while fishing. Mainly because I carry a big .357 Magnum and it's hard to conceal. Besides, a big stainless steel advertisement on my hip can prevent trouble before it starts. Quote
Pantera61 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 We don't have rights in NJ. That being said, I don't believe I would carry if I could. A switchblade or extendable baton on the other hand ... Quote

Many people do carry concealed loaded weapons. They are called criminals. Those are the folks who should make you feel uncomfortable. Quote
NeedAnewScreenName-587943 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 saw an 'Cops in Alaska' type show where a salmon fisherman had a 50cal handgun on the rocks at his feet. cop had no prob with it, in plain view, and defense from death as bear rag doll toy. Quote
swilly78 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I wish I could have a CCW, IL sucks! x2, Im moving south after the Kiddo graduates high school! Quote
bass or bass ? Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I have a CCW, and always carry, 24/7. Arizona is one of the most gun friendly states. On the boat I always have which ever gun I'm carrying that day, and my designated boat gun, stored in my boat bag, a 1911A1. Quote
done Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 I wish I could have a CCW, IL sucks! x2, Im moving south after the Kiddo graduates high school! Well you will really appreciate it for the freedom and the Year round fishing. I grew up WNY, right on the shores of the Niagara River. My home lake has not frozen at all in the 10 years I have been here. I fish every month of the year. Got a special appreciation for it after growing up in the great white north. Quote
b.Lee Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 There was a time when I didn't, but one day, for some reason I put it in my tackle bag. At that time I was fishing out of a little 14ft Jonboat. I was fishing an area and two teens came around a point and started at me. They stopped right where I was fishing and I said hi and asked them to move off of the spot I was fishing. They kept moving closer and closer and I didn't think anything of it untill they started looking in my boat. I heard one say to the other, "Does he have anything?". I then reach into my bag and showed them what I had. They quickly turned and went the other way. You just never know. thats a crazy story fluke! Quote
Fishing Doug Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Almost always. Open carry or concealed...just depends where I am. Quote

Yeah, I grew up in Phoenix, and after the Navy ended up in Illinois. I had to go and fall in love with a single mother and kinda take over as Dad to the kids. One of them is now a Marine, the other just turned 17 today. Another year and a half and Im thinking Texas. Fishing year round sounds great about now, I wish I appriciated it more in my youth. And the idea of a CCW makes me really want outta here. OIFBasser Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 If I go to fish docks at Edgewater Park at night (Lake Erie- Cleveland) I always carry(S&W 457), and never go alone. Other than that most of the time I wear my K-bar on my hip. It works good on braided line, cutting up Bluegills for bait, and lets punks know what they have in store. I look at like this. If you have a couple thousand in gear, and those types of garbage are hanging around, you should carry away. If your against firearms, you should google 911 calls when people shot an intruder, it will open your eyes to how they felt as victims. Quote

I mean to say that out loud. They really did not even care one bit about alerting you. Just messed up. Honestly that is the type of situation that scares me. IF the dude whips out a gun or knife or charges me well it is cut and dry. Now you got 2 kids, possibly minors, acting like that. You could pull out the gun like you did and have it work out. You could get those 2 kids to call the cops, claim you were threatening them, and it would be a you said, they said type of situation with 2 minors and an armed older gentleman. Depending on the Sheriff could go either way. Quote

I go hunting with my county's sheriff. I think I'm good in that situation.  ;D I took mine with me yesterday when I went to the river, perfectly concealed beneath my sweatshirt. I met 4 different people yesterday. All were very nice, but I still had an added sense of security in an area that can be really shady. No, people that are uncomfortable with guns are usually just uncomfortable with guns. Besides, you don't go down to the convenience store and pick up a permit. After the fingerprinting, FBI and other state agency background checks, we are required to take a class covering the laws and conflict resolution/de-escalation. Then a quick proficiency shoot. I think you would be shocked if you knew how many people were carrying around you... and that would make you surprised at how nothing happened around you. ...lol worry about the criminals that carry, not the legal, law abiding citizens. Even if the natural had a permit- he didn't use a weapon in the course of his crimes and he has lost the ability to have a permit now anyways. The only time I'm not carrying is when I'm sleeping or in a prohibited area. Concealed means concealed. RW, ever see anything when we roomed together? For the last 7-8 years, I've been carrying... never even a second look from friends, coworkers, congregation, etc. I travel with my boss occasionally- even when we have to double up on hotel rooms, never been spotted. Criminals don't wait for you to call 911... you are your own 1st line of defense, whether you want to be or not. I owe it to my family to be around to protect them and provide for them. Quote
