VABassin'14 Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I might be the only person in America that agrees with it, but I still am "OK" with the rule. IMO, a team should be able to come up with one stop at the end of the game if they desirve to win. Quote
rondef Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I think there will be a serious discussion at the owners meeting in reference to this. I think they should play an entire extra quarter, then sudden death if they are still tied. Quote

The NFL prides itself on completing games within 3-3.5 hours. Quote
Super User fishinfiend Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 I like it just the way it is. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 Over time rule will probably not change. Games are longer today than they used to be for 2 primary reasons, 1. It's a passing game and the clock stops on incompletes and out of bounds. 2. Challenges and reviews, which I don't care for, it appears to me that the original call stands the vast majority of the time. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 SirSnookalot, Add to your list the commercials and you have a game that can go over three hours. Look at the last three minutes of a basketball game. It can take a half hour to play it, with time outs and fouls. I also like the current NFL sudden death overtime rule but if it is going to be changed, why not do as the NCAA does and give each team at least one chance to have the ball. Should be interesting to see what the owners decide. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 I agree about the commercials but the commercials pay for us to see it on tv and the networks are in business to make money. I'd hate to see every game on PPV or additional sports package. The state of the union speech in PPV, hmmmm not a bad idea. lol Quote
Little Luey Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 during the Vikings/Saints game they show a stadistic on which team wins the coin toss they end up winning about half the games. So in my mind defences are making stops, it is not automatic that the team receiving the ball will win the game. Playing one more quarter will be very taxing on the players, more cramps/injuries may come. I think they should leave it the way it is. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 Hmm... If it's 50/50, just like the coin toss, why should anything be changed? : Quote
SuskyDude Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I'm for leaving it the way it is. HOWEVER.... What about first team to score six points wins? What about just for the playoffs? Think about it. I think what most people are sick of seeing is a team drive maybe 50-60 yds downfield (often with the help of a PI or some such nonsense), get STOPPED, then kick a field goal to win the game. My opinion is that fiel goals are weak. Its why they're worth half a touchdown. Two of them to win an overtime playoff game I say. Or one good old fashioned touchdown! OR we could leave it the way it is. Have any of you heard of defense? Quote
frogtog Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Well at the end of the fourth quarter if the game is tided. This means that one team is just as good as the other. So just let the coin toss decide who wins. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 I like the college overtime format but I dont agree with them starting their drive already in field goal range. I say start 'em at mid-field and make 'em at least get a couple first downs to get in FG range. Then the other team gets their shot (starting at the 50) to tie or win the game....and so on. I doubt the players union would allow so much extra time to be played without some agreement to be paid more for these OT games and like someone mentioned, you have the fatigue factor coming in and there is more time for injuries to occur. But, as someone said, the percentages say that there's no guarantee that whoever gets the ball first will win. I remember hearing about midway thru the season that it was only about 40-45% of the time that the team getting the ball first won. So maybe nothing is wrong. But I'd like to see the rules changed anyway. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted January 26, 2010 Super User Posted January 26, 2010 I believe this was the 4th championship game to go into OT. Winner of the flip lost the other 3 times. Coaches are aware of the statistics or should be when it comes to coin flips. Don't like overtimes? Change the rules of the game to ensure less OT's. Like scoring multiple TD's in a Qtr, you can kick one PAT, but on the other TD's in the same QTR, you must go for 2. PAT's are high percentage, but 2pt conversions aren't. Quote
