Super User bilgerat Posted January 24, 2010 Super User Posted January 24, 2010 Anyone catch "Sniper: Inside The Crosshairs" on the History Channel ? Man, this show blew my mind. They featured, among several, Carlos Hathcock who shot an enemy sniper through his own sight and out the back of his head in Vietnam. They also had Robert Furlong, who killed a Taliban member from 1.5 miles, yes miles. Supposed to be the longest kill shot in history. I know jack squat about firearms, but this show was fascinating. Super User Root beer Posted January 24, 2010 Super User Posted January 24, 2010 I've seen couple sniper show on military channel. Blew my mind. One marine sniper in Iraq shot a insurgent 1700 yards away. He was on a rooftop of a building, and he shot at an downward angle with wind blowing in his face. Fascinating shot. To make it more fascinating, he set up his scope to make the shot within few seconds under pressure. Quote
bass or bass ? Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Yeah, it was a great show. I'm quite familiar with Gunny Hathcock's accomplishments. Quote
microman Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 the new record is 2 miles away, and it was with a m240 mg Quote
Super User Dan: Posted January 24, 2010 Super User Posted January 24, 2010 the new record is 2 miles away, and it was with a m240 mg Are you sure? That doesn't sound right. I have a hard time believing a 7.62 machine gun has the longest kill shot instead of something like a 50 cal bolt action rifle. Quote

tbird Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Carlos Hathcock has a book written about him , I think it's called 99 confirmed kills. It tells about his time over in Vietnam. Interesting read. T Quote
CanalStalkin Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Didn't he have a book called "one shot one kill"? I have read bits and pieces of it and it was awesome. Quote

Thai Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Simo Hayha = Most badass sniper to ever live 505 Confirmed kills 542 if you count the poor shmoes whos bodies they never found... Did I mention he was shooting a Mosin-Nagant Model 28 rifle with no scope? Simo has been credited with at least 700 kills all together Quote
shootermcbob Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 The book about Gunnery SGT. Carlos Hathcock was titled "Marine Sniper, 93 Confirmed Kills" and the part where he shot the other sniper thru his scope was confirmed by his spotter whose name was John Burke. Quote
jdw174 Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Hathcock also hit a VC, moving on a bicycle, at close to a mile using an M2 Browning .50 with a scope mounted on it. That's from his book. Quote
done Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 They do a sniper competition here in Gastonia, NC every year. Get teams from all over. It is real cool to see. I am not a sharpshooter by any means, but I know enough about shooting to really appreciate the talent these men have. Not JUST the shooting part but in the patience and skill they have to sneak up on a target without being noticed. Quote
