Super User .dsaavedra. Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 i just got the deluxe system from bass pro yesterday on a whim (i had seen my friend use one a while back and thought it was cool, saw one yesterday and picked it up) its a really good kit, its great how it keeps the honing stones at consistent angles every time. it got my fixed blade hunting knife VERY sharp, just running through the coarse-ultra fine stones. the sell additional stones for it that get finer, and stones for serrations etc. it came with natural stones, but they have diamond stones available, which i would imagine are better and would get the knife sharper than the natural stones. overall, super easy to use, works great, and is consistent. well worth the $45 i paid for it, and i recommend it to anyone. http://www.lanskysharpeners.com/LKCLX.php Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 30, 2009 Super User Posted December 30, 2009 I'm using a Spyderco Sharpmaker. I've never tried the lansky. Has anybody out there used both and would like to offer a little feedback? Quote
tnbassfisher Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I really need to get a good wet stone. More than half the knives I own wouldn't cut butter. Quote
moby bass Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 I really need to get a good wet stone. More than half the knives I own wouldn't cut butter. Most of our kitchen knifes wouldn't cut hot butter. ;D I was looking at the Chef's Choice electric sharpener over the holidays. Anybody have any experience with this? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted December 31, 2009 Super User Posted December 31, 2009 An electric sharpener is a great way to ruin a good knife. I was quite enamored with the Lansky system in my younger days. Finally purchased one about 10 years ago. Tried it, hated it, returned it. Give me a good Arkansas stone any day. Quote

I had a shop teacher that could put a razor edge on just about anything with one of those stones. I wished I had paid a bit more attention. I can get a decent edge but nothing like that. Quote

That and diamonds last a bagillion times longer. Over time your stones can get wavy and inconsistent, making it much harder to get a good edge. I've heard good things about that system but I have not tried it myself. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted December 31, 2009 Super User Posted December 31, 2009 Good site, lots of good info and a few videos to check out. http://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Arkansas-Stones-C96.aspx?gclid=COCr5LGUgZ8CFYdd5QodtVZAhQ Quote

Using the Lansky system was too much of a chore. Takes me less than a minute to put a good edge on a knife using my large whetstone. I carry a small diamond EZE Lap in my hunting pack, as well as a Lansky double sided folding diamond hone. They do a decent job of putting an edge on a knife, but I still prefer a good stone over anything. A diamond will put a sharp edge on a knife, but it is often too thin of an edge and too easily dulled. I can put a longer lasting edge on any of my knives using my 20 year old medium stone. Quote
shootermcbob Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 some people seem to have the knack for keeping the proper angle on knife when sharpening. That is the key.I myself am either too uncoordinated or too stupid, or both. I therefore bought the Lansky and later a gatco. I like the gatco system much better and can sharpen a knife now that is scary sharp. Quote
Eternal Angler Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I was looking for a nice sharpener, I might have to buy this one. I need something for my Rapala fillet knife. Quote
NOVA Angler Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I bought an Apex Edge Pro a few months ago and really like it. Similar to the Lansky except no knife clip. I've heard that the knife clips aren't worth a hoot. I just like knowing that I have the correct angle edge on my knives. I could never get it right with a plain stone. http://edgeproinc204.corecommerce.com/Apex-Model-Edge-Pro-System-c3/ Quote
