The "most memorable christmas gifts" thread got me to thinking about Christmases as a child.

While today there are more times than not that my family has Turkey and or ham as the main course .....When I was a child we most always had oysters, grits, and corncakes. It had little do do with money , It had more to do with tradition.....The way it was told to me by my daddy was that during the depression they simply had no money for a turkey or any pork and that oysters at the time were plentiful and free for those who wanted to dig .  We still have oysters for the Thanksgiving meal and a pot of oyster stew on Christmas eve.

It would be Interesting to know of any of y'alls traditions and the history behind them.

Dinner Christmas Eve with son and his wife at a nice restaurant. Going to Firebirds this year.

Late church service starting at 11:30 PM. May not make it due to the inclement weather this year.

Christmas breakfast which wife makes and it is super.

Open presents around 11 PM when son and wife arrive with grand-dog.

Dinner at Noon or 1 PM.

Watch football and play with dog.

Son and wife go home; we clean up; watch more football; pass out.  :)

When I was a kid we always used to spend a day at the beach in Key Largo and Islamorada. Now that I live near my grandparents, we have a mini fishing derby at my grandad's pond.

("so help me, he had yellow teeth")

Farkus?

Yep that's him!

When I was a kid, my sister and I always woke up to a present on the foot of our beds.  And, we always had Christmas Eve dinner at my uncles house, with all the relatives from my dad's side of the family there.  It was about the only time of the year we all got together.

Our traditions go WAY back!  Mongo and Ork used to come over to our cave with Tonga and Jim (the black sheep of the family). We'd sit around the campfire and exchange gifts of rocks, spears, and Yak antlers.  Then we would all head out for the annual mastodon hunt.  But sometimes we couldn't find one, so we settled for a woolly mammoth.  Either way, the Christmas meal was always a good one!

Ah good times!

We're not as ambitious any more. Nowadays, we just hang out in the living room, drink beer and watch football!

I start around 5:00 am Christmas morning making Cajun Dirty Rice while I cook breakfast of eggs, bacon, & biscuits. The kids and grandkids arrive by 9:00 to open presents and then we all go to my oldest brothers for the big Christmas feast.

Sometime between December 26 and New Years Day I can be found on the lake chunking a jig.  ;)

This has been the same since I was born.

Go to my Dad's mother's house on Christmas Eve, celebrating with them. Then going to the 11:00 Christmas Eve Church Service

Getting Up at around 6 Am, looking at what "Santa" has brought.

Going to my Mom's Mother's house and celebrating with that side of the family.
