Super User 5bass Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 September 11, 2001. Sept 11th is #1 by far and affected everyone in some way. And although this pale's in comparison to the terrorist attacks, Earnhardt's death was a big event here in the South. I'll always remember both. And how could I forget...traveled to and roomed with Burley for a whole week at Kentucky Lake and lived to tell about it. Quote
fathom Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 September 11, 2001. agreed. the pearl harbor of its day. Quote

Fisher of Men Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 You know the first mention of this being the end of a decade really surprised me. It just doesn't seem that another one has passed. Time moves so fast. My daughter was born in '98 and I guess her first 11 years have been just about the greatest time of my life. 9/11 is definitely the tragic event of my lifetime. I'll always remember that day. As far as products/inventions go, I don't know. Did anyone mention Wi-fi? :-/ (at least for cell phones)? Quote

That's still unbelieveable. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 With the exception of the death of Michael Jackson (just a slimy bug on the windshield of history) I agree with most all that has been said above. Being totally selfish, what I will remember most about this decade is that I joined BassResource and became an active participant. Due to this board and the Road Trips, I have made three life-long friends. A man of my temperament does not make friends easily, so I cherish each of them and thank BassResource for providing such a priceless opportunity. Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 I hate to say this, but... There is no doubt 9/11 was the most traumatic, widespread, unifying, etc event of the decade. However, it seems to me that a lot of people have already forgotten about it. It seems as though the misadventures following it in Iraq/Afghanistan have overshadowed it. But the most important event? The event that changed the most lives? I'd have to give that to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, the symbolic end of the Cold War. This decade can be remembered as a decade in which two superpowers were not trying to blow the hell out of each other...and take the rest of the world with them. This got me thinking...I was trying to come up with something that impacts society for long periods of time...but I couldn't think of anything. Our world today heals itself and changes so quickly. Remember 1990? The Cold War almost means nothing now. I'm not trying to undermine things like 9/11, etc. I'm just making an observation. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 1. Historic U.S 2008 Presidential election. 9/11 is up there but since there have been other terrorist and sneak attacks, it gets my second spot. Skinny Jeans and shaggy haircuts. You missed the 60's, this is old stuff, lol Quote

I do not concede that people have forgotten about it, but even if they have, the repercussions of it are still evident and will be for a long time. Quote

ohioriverrat Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Aside from folks pointing out that 1990's were not of this decade, 9-11 has absolutely NOT been forgotten. A few country bumkins may not keep it in the forefront, but most people have NOT, and will NOT forget that horrific event... and the wars are tieing right into it as well. I was just in NYC, and I assure you, it is not forgotten. Every time an airplane flies overhead, MOST eyes turn to it, even if just for a fleeting moment. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 On a serious note, 9/11 and the global fight against terror. On the fun side, the rebirth of Country Music and living in The South! Merry Christmas Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 23, 2009 Super User Posted December 23, 2009 I sit here and think back to the 60's and 70's and so on. Ask your self that question 20 years from now! It will vary from most folks as to what is remembered. My first thought of the 60's was NASA and space . Some might remember the Cuban Missile Crisis, Woodstock, JFK assasination, civil rights movements, and Nam to name a few. I thought someone would mention the Red Sox curse was lifted. That was big news in Bean Town. First decade without a Cowboys playoff win. ;D This decade will mark the first black president being elected. Quote
