shootermcbob Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Being a dallas cowboy fan since I was 6, I have to jump in here. The problem with the cowboys is not Wade Phillips. It is the man who hired him, and who insists on keeping him around. Jerry Jones is an outstanding businessman. He played on the Arkansas football team that won a national championship in 1964? i believe. That does not make him a "football man" or a GM. Money makes him that. He had 12 draft picks this past draft. The cowboys lack explosiveness on both sides of the ball. With 12 draft picks, he should have traded, moved up in the draft, whatever it took to get some players who are, will be, starters who have the potential to be great players. Instead, he drafted a kickoff specialist. That is the only player from this draft who can and is helping the cowboys. He drafted three defensive ends to convert to outside linebacker where he has Ware and Spencer already. If you fans and haters alike will remember, starting in 1996, Jones felt the cowboys were so loaded with talent that he started drafting for special teams and depth, and subsequently the team went farther and farther down hill. The only smart thing I have ever heard come out of Barry Switzers mouth was " The team with the most "best"players usually wins. We are seeing the same thing right now. The cowboys were not competitive until Parcells came in and rebuilt the roster. He has been gone for what, 3 years now. Look at the 13-3 team, and look at the cowboys now. The cowboys will continue to fall until Jones once again realizes that he needs help (read someone who can do the gm job) and hires Polian, Wolf, or someone to draft well, spend wisely in free agency, and finally find a real coach. Until that happens, we cowboys fans are destined to watch a team with mediocre talent and mediocre results. Quote
steezy Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Its plain and simple, Dallas doesn't win in Dec and won't start this year. Tony Romo is more interested in trips to Mex and Vegas than concentrating on winning a championship. Philliy will wipe their butts again in the last game this year just like last year and probably win the Division. BTW, I am not a cowboys fan, GO PATRIOTS! Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 10, 2009 Super User Posted December 10, 2009 This years draft addressed the need for ball hawks that could contribute immediatley on special teams. Notice the lack of turnovers the past few years! Each defensive player they got addressed those needs. The safety and Corner from Cincy had 21 turnovers between them. The kicker addressed the 35 yard average starting field position. Took the Ball St Offensive linemen who graded out at 82% and could start if asked. Pass rushers on the edge. Got talent there, one guy forced 5 fumbles from the edge, one was sack leader. Can't play if your injuried!!!!!!! The rookie class got hurt in training camp. Can't blame Jerry for that! Too early to gamble. Moving up means giving future picks or current talent. What we had is a good back up TE, Bennett. 3 good running backs with the verdict still out on Felix Jones being injury prone. What else do we have to trade with? Sorry, not many teams that bring in 6 new starters on defense gel untill late season. One issue in the offseason that was talked about was the departure of TO. We couldn't have got up that high in the draft to get a WR. Fact, very few WR's are impact players first year! For the few who are, there are 10 that weren't, its a gamble. During the Parcel years and prior, Dallas was one of the least injury prone teams going, we have been blessed on that aspect. So the odds are in your favor, your due for some injuries and the boys have had their share the past two years. Jerry Jones has tried to spend the money to get talent. The sorry years were with unknowns at coach. Campo???? Switzer???? Say what you want to about Jerry Jones! How do you account for all the penalties under Parcels? Can't blame that on Jerry. Or under Wade? Can't win if your turning the ball over, most penalized team in football. Those are characteristics of multiiple coaches over the years. I love my Cowboys, but see it differently. Jerry controls coaches, I will give you that. Hard to fire a guy that goes 13-3 during the TO saga. Wade and Garrett need to go if they don't win a playoff game this season. I would love to have Shanahan in Dallas. Quote
shootermcbob Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Matt, I think you must be looking at the cowboys through rose colored Costa del Mars ;D ;D. I am a huge cowboy fan. I am also a huge football fan. You mentioned the draft this year. Which of the Cinncinnati ballhawks have helped us on special teams???? Smith and Mickens did not make the team. How many of the drafted players are on the team currently? (Five counting the kickoff specialist) The guard from ball state is a project according to Wade Phillips himself. You are defending Jones by further illustrating my points. I did not say we needed to trade players, only draft picks to get some guys who can play. Look around the league at the best teams? Start with Pittsburgh. Down year this year, but they are usually very good. They draft well and they develop their players. They draft people who they believe will START for them, maybe not this year, but certainly within the next two or three years. Which of our draft picks, aside from the kickoff specialist, is going to start for us? Other than Williams, a project d-lineman converting to linebacker by the way, none of the players they took are special. None are difference makers. They are role players, special teamers, and you can not win consistently in the nfl without many good players mixed in with some great ones. As I am typing this I realize that we are probably going to have to agree to disagree. I agree about the injuries and penalties, but taking your point further, what can be done about the penalities when you have no depth because you draft poorly. You can't sit someone because there is no player to replace them with. I also agree the draft class will not be judged completely for a few years, but already has the looks of a complete failure. All that being said, with great power comes great responsibility. And that responsibility rests solely with Jerry Jones. Look over the last twenty years. The cowboys have been upper echelon of the league two times during this time period. When was that? When Jimmy Johnson was in charge of team and players and the year after parcells left with the team HE re-tooled. Look at the time periods in between and there is no one else to blame but Jerry. He hired Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo and he ran the draft room. He is the person who said in "96 the 'boys were so loaded that they just needed to draft for depth. How did that work out? Finally, I agree about Shanahan being an outstanding coach, especially offensively. He would help us immediately. However, I think Shanahan is a marginal talent evaluator at best. Look at his teams in Denver. They were poor defensively and were lackign talent and depth overall, especially towards the end of his stay there. Quote
shootermcbob Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Matt, let me clarify my point about the draft class. My take is the cowboys would have been better off trading up or trading for picks next year than wasting picks on players that have little or no chance to start within next two years or even make the team. We drafted 12 players and 4 made our team. Ok, five counting the kicker. I would have rather seen us get 2 players who have the potential to be stars than 4 guys who can play special teams. Those guys are available in every draft. Quote
LHC - Bank Robber Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Jones is the problem whether you like it or not, hes an owner not a GM, but dont try telling him that. Remeber Jones hired both campo and switzer, so dont blame them, its not there fault they were hired for a job which they were under quilified for. As for Parcel just look what he did with miami (or go back and look what he did in the past). Theres really only been one constant in dallas and its jerry jones. Quote

Super User Matt Fly Posted December 10, 2009 Super User Posted December 10, 2009 WE didn't have alot to trade up or down with. To do that, you have to mortgage the future by using future draft picks. I see your Rose Colored Glasses comment. hmmm! Quote
shootermcbob Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 We had 12 draft picks this year. If you factor in your man Jerry Jones mortgaging the future (your term) with the Roy Williams trade, we had alot to trade with. Instead, we got a mediocre number 2 receiver to go along with a kickoff specialist...at least at this point. I never said the trades had to be in this draft. There is always a team in "love" with a player who is willing to trade. Unfortunately, too many times that has been dallas...See Joey Galloway and Roy Williams. With the rosy colored glasses comment..at least i made them a very expensive brand. ;D Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 10, 2009 Super User Posted December 10, 2009 Robby Rose, a GUY who got caught cheating in a bass tournanment loved to use that term, he is a Texan that loved USC. So Rose Colored glasses is ongoing thing between him and other forum members. Used to be, no talkie anymore. 8-) Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted December 14, 2009 Super User Posted December 14, 2009 It's December and every one knows what that means. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted December 16, 2009 Super User Posted December 16, 2009 I will be dead and in my grave and still be a Boys fan!!! Its really doesn't boil down to December. When its said and and done, Jan. would be the month to be remembered. Last time I checked, Dallas only had one team that has had a better Jan, and that would be Pittsburg. I guess you could say the rest of the league goes in the crapper as well. After all, We have 5 trophies? HOw many times has your team went in the crapper. There are 29 other teams that haven't done as good as the boys in Jan. ;D Quote
shootermcbob Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Actually, there are 32 teams in the NFL. Pittsburgh has more rings, and you can't count Dallas. So, Dallas has done better in January than 30 other teams. Just not lately...like for the last 14 years and counting. Quote

VABassin'14 Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 Last time I checked, the Cowboys still haven't won a playoff game in 14 yrs. So I would say that Jan hasn't been to kind for "America's Team" for quite some time. Quote
