uicdent11 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 My wife is schedule for what's called a tru-fuse back surgery this Wednesday. They will remove bone in her lower back and replace it with cadaver bone. It will fuse L4,L5, and S1. Although she is only 25, she has had chronic back pain for several years now. It all stems from a fall down the stairs when she was younger, hitting the outside bar of a trampoline, and many years and dance/cheerleading. We have spent the last several months going from Dr. to Dr. and from medication to medication with no relief. The pain specialist finally decided she would be a good candidate for this surgery. Well, the claim from my schools insurance for the surgery was denied, but after getting a second opinion she is a go for the surgery. Of course they can't fit her for a back brace that is covered by insurance so we have to fork out 5 Loomis GLX rods for the brace. I need to stay off the flea market page for awhile. Please pray that she will be pain free post surgery and will have a speedy recover. She has missed several days of work because of the pain and doctors visits. I am still in school, so it will be a tough couple months. Thank you for keeping her in your prayers. Quote
Super User Micro Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Yep, you are in for a tough couple of months, and so is she. But rest assured, things will inprove and in the very near future she will be much better. Both of your lives will be improved. Prayers for your wife. Quote
Simp Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Sure will big guy. My dad suffers from chronic back as well and has chosen to medicate over surgery. IMHO I think you guys are making the right decision and good luck! I'm sure all of us here at BR will keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Quote

uicdent11 Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Thank you guys so much. I wanted to add a pic to show that she does do some fishing herself. This is also the pic on the left. The pond in the background helped get her "hooked" on fishing. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Nothing but positive energy for you guys. Awesome picture, BTW. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Back surgery is scary. I underwent a microdiscectomy last year in June for 3 ruptured discs at the ripe old age of 23. A good season of fishing being laid up in the bed, one of the main things that kept me from going stir crazy was joining this board. The main thing to remember is for her to take her time recovering and take care of her. Good luck to both of you. Quote
adclem Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 No problem, consider her added to my prayer list as well as my families prayer list. Later, Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 15, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 15, 2009 You guys are doing the right thing. It will be tough for the short term, but the long term gains are enormous. Prayers sent. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 thoughts n prayers uicdent11 to you and yours, hopes for a speedy recovery. a lower back injury forced me to me to lay down the golf stix and never pick one up again, at her young age and the medicine of today, she'll be good to go. God Bless! Quote
CanalStalkin Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Prayers going your way dude, good luck. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 As others have said, you reach a certain point where surgery is the only option; and it still is a difficult decision. One thing that will come in handy is a grabber/grappler device. It was a life-saver after my procedure. God bless and prayers for all involved. Make sure she really boosts her calcium and vitamin D intake after surgery. This will really help the bones and her recovery progress. I noticed the Marquette shirt. Is she an alumnus? Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted December 15, 2009 Super User Posted December 15, 2009 Your wife and you are in my prayers. Due to an auto accident, I've been through six surgeries on my spine. I've gone from a wheelchair to walking normal. (Which I thought I never would again) Surgical procedures today, compared to thirty years ago are much improved, plus your wife's young age will help. Make sure she follows the doctor's orders, and everything should work out fine. The first few weeks you'll be very busy, but it will be worth it in the long run. Good luck, and God bless.
