uicdent11 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Got a rod delivered today in a cardboard tube and what'd ya know, it was broke almost all the way through the middle. Rod was in 2 pieces. > I filed a claim and will wait to hear back in 1 business day. The package did have insurance. Anybody ever deal with the happening? What did they end up offering you? Hopefully it will all work out. I think I would vent even more if it wasn't 38 degrees today. Guess I have 3 months for them to replace/refund it. Quote
-HAWK- Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 That stinks. I have had 7 rods shipped through UPS and not one problem. I refuse to purchase a rod online and have it shipped through USPS. Quote
uicdent11 Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 I have had tubes broken by all three major companies. This is the only time the actual rod was broken as well. FedEx actually left the broken tube on my doorstep. Thought that was a nice gesture. I usually ship in 2.5' PVC and have yet to have a problem. Oh well. I am going to the anger out in a little modern warfare 2 before dinner. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted December 2, 2009 Super User Posted December 2, 2009 that sucks....I've not had any trouble yet out of carboard tubes..... ....what kind of rod was it? Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I picked a rod up at the Post Office that was packed in a PVC pipe. When I went to the car, I opened the tube up and saw the rod was broken in half. I turned around and went right back into the Post Office to file a claim. The guy behind the counter hinted that I went outside and broke the rod, because he said there was no way it could get broken while in the PVC Tubing. Before I punched the guy in the head, I asked for a manager on hand and she politely filed the claim for me and took the rod and tube for their "investigation." After several weeks, I received a check for $12 more than what it was insured for. I don't know why the check was for more. Maybe a bonus for me having restraint and not killing the guy behind the counter. Quote
uicdent11 Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Haha. So it is my understanding that I will most likely get a check for what the insurance was for? I think he had insurance on it for $150, but not sure. The rod was a CBR 843. Do you think they would let me keep the rod? Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 This thread gives me a warm fuzzy feeling all over since I am waiting for a rod I ordered from TW. It never occurred to me it's being shipped during the holiday season (duh). Oh well, I'm sure UPS is being extra careful this season to make sure everyone's package arrives undamaged...... : Quote
Super User cart7t Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 I've had as many bad rod experiences with UPS as I have the USPS. I've gotten 2 rods in the past week. Both USPS. The first one came in a really cheap cardboard tube that was split but miraculously, the rod survived. The second one today arrived fine. Neither rod was well packed, in fact both rods had no packing inside at all. : Quote

I've had rods shipped through the post office a few times and never had any problems. Not to mention anything i sell and have shipped is always delivered on time if not earlier, and on top of that it's always the cheapest. I always feel better when I see the site I am ordering from is shipping through usps and not ups. I've never really dealt with fedex. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 I just my new Damiki Dark Angel from Tackle Warehouse with no trouble from UPS. Thankfully I've not had trouble through any of the companies Quote

Luckily for me all the rods I have ever received ended up at my door in good shape. I did have one like Cart7 where the cardboard (usps) was mangled, but somehow the rod came out unscathed. Quote

I have no idea, but I was not happy, because it was a custom flipping stick built on an IMX blank. Fortunately, I have ordered over 35 rods from either eBay, Cabelas, Bass Pro, TW, etc., which have been shipped through UPS, USPS, & FedEx and that was the only one that didn't make it safely. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I received a rod in the cheapest cardboard tube, it was 3 poster tubes taped together, and when it arrived at my doorstep all 3 tubes bent like as though they were on hinges. I slowly opened one end and slid out the rod, surprisingly the rod was in 1 piece. I was amazed, cant explain how, but that Okuma rod made the trip. I ship in PVC only. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 When shipping rods, put strong tape around the rod handle and put the other end on out of the tube holding the handle near or against the cap. Then put the end cap on. That prevents the rod tip from making contact with the other end of the tube which is why it can get broken in ANY tube. Wrapping the rod in newspaper will cushion it from side impact. Quote
bowfish12 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Only one time so far and it was USPS, cheap cardboard tube from BPS was bent dam near in half, but when I opened it not a scratch on the rod. Called and did a little bit***ng and was told that if I ever wanted a rod shipped through them to call and place the order and request Fed Ex. The post office has no business shipping rods, most of their delivery vehicles are not equipped to carry packages that are that long. Quote

Most of the time when I receive rods through USPS I end up with a card in the mail stating that the package was to large to deliver and I need to pick it up. I kind of like that seeing my wife never really knows when a new rod is slipped into the mix ;D Quote
uicdent11 Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 So, I filed the claim through the 1800 number, but they haven't called me back yet. I went to my post office to ship something out and asked them about the situation. They stated that it is the sellers responsibility to file the claim because he took out the insurance. I am suppose to be reimbursed by the seller. Luckycraft, it sounds like you were able to get the insurance money as the buyer correct? Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I used to deal with a lot of fragile items being shipped ( electronic pc boards ). 99% of the time the broken or damaged items are strictly related to bad packaging. Many am shippers don't even go so far as using peanuts. We viewed peanuts as substandard as the item tended to settle and before long the peanuts were not protecting the item. We foamed everything from a liquid with a plastic liner and never had a problem. Point being most of the above items were improper packaging as I read them. That is not the carrier's fault it is the packager. Now if they break a heavy walled pvc tube then that is a different story. I am a little rusty but I believe the person who originated the shipping needs to file the claim but the receiver needs to help by taking pictures for the originator. JMHO FFI - AKA Matt Crum Quote
D4u2s0t Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I've never had any problems, but a buddy of mine who's a DJ has had a few packages get banged up in shipping. They always take care of it, but I don't think they were too quick about it. Quote
uicdent11 Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 Well, to my surprise, I got a check from USPS for the insurance amount plus the shipping cost (minus the cost of insurance). I filed a claim through their 1800 #, but never got a call back. The seller filed a claim online and uploaded the pictures and it updated to "approved Weds. and I got the check today. Not bad at all USPS I guess I even get a new rod out of the deal. Quote
