Super User Tin Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 Northeastern University did it last month and now Hofstra. I looked at Northeastern for grad school and it was amazing, right in the middle of Boston, this place is loaded with money and still cut there team. Now today Hofstra cut theirs. My girlfriend went to Hofstra for two years and this place is crazy. The freshman parking lot consists of nothing but BRAND NEW Mercedes, Hummers, BMW's, and Mazarati's. And even they are saying it costs too much. Greed or signs of a tough time? These schools cost 35k+ to attend. Word has it numerous other schools in the northeast will be cutting athletic programs (including mine)... :-[ Quote
tipptruck1 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I think its the greed, times were in, family's wanting there boys to go to school instead of playing football, and the work load these kids have at them schools. Iam sure the work load at them schools are not easy. Then you throw in football it just might be hard to get all the work done. So maybe the school's have seen a low interest in young men trying out for football. The men would rather work on there study's. You also have to think the schools up there are more about education then sports. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 3, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 3, 2009 I agree with that. The other thing is just making money as a student. I could have played hockey but since almost all of my tuition is paid for via grants and scholarships would rather work and make money so I can go out and have fun. Quote

Playing college football and going to school at the same time teaches time management, something very important in the "real world." It was one of the best decisions of my life. Schools in the Northeast more concerned with studying over football? Go to Penn State some weekend..... :-X Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 Lamar University in Beaumont Texas cut there football program back in the early 90s. The company I worked for lost a ton of money due to the fact that the owner was one of the chancellors that voted to cut the program. Lots of our largest clients were big backers for the football program, they were plenty p^&sed at him when it happened and took their business elsewhere. Times are so hard down here now that they are starting up their program again for 2010. Got to bring the big boosters back into the program. People don't realize how much the university can lose when they p%^s off the big money boosters. Any university without a football and/or a basketball program is just a second tier facility. IMO. Super User Dan: Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 Both are CAA teams. The problem with them is that they suck. Northeastern's football facilities are terrible. They don't get good recruits and therefore don't have good teams. It's tough to generate money with crappy teams. Another factor may be precisely the fact that they have super rich, spoiled kids. Sometimes schools with student bodies that are composed of rich, snooty, northeastern kids have difficulty generating interest in football because the kids just don't care. This is the case with Richmond. They are the reigning FCS champions but they don't have a very large fan base and do not sell out very often (at least in recent years, this year may have been different). They also have a small stadium. All that has been attributed to the fact that they don't place importance on football because the kids are rich, snobby, private school kids who just don't care. *I completely understand that I am saying Hofstra sucks despite the fact that they beat my JMU Dukes this year. It was a fluke, get over it. Quote

Here is a link, here. I think it just goes to show you that other than "Hockey East" the New England area isnt that high on college sports its mostly a Pro sports area. Unlike other parts of the country that have very stand out conferences the New England area in football isnt one of them. Quote
Super User Tin Posted December 4, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 4, 2009 I personally could care less about college football around here, I was shocked to see such wealthy schools cutting programs. And I'm a hockey player so I don't mind "Hokcey East" one bit. Quote

Super User Chris at Tech Posted December 5, 2009 Super User Posted December 5, 2009 It doesn't matter how expensive the schools are. This is a business decision. If football at these schools costs more to run than it returns in ticket sales, etc, then it's not profitable. Quote
mwbrown Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 with a record like URI's this year they probably should cut the program Quote
