Uncle Leo Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 They are bad in the Illinois River. I have fished the river and had these carp jump out of the water about in the boat. Motor noise seems to cause them to jump into boats. It is so bad down near Peoria, IL that boaters are wearing helmets as these have hit fisherman in the head at high speeds. I have caught these up to 18 lbs fishing for bass. They will readily hit a crankbait and are fierce fighters. Quote
brushhoggin Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 crazy how their eyes are on the bottom of its head. unlike a bass having theirs on top.i guess bass need to see upwards to ambush shad and whatnot, whereas carp just suck the bottom up? Quote
Super User firefightn15 Posted December 3, 2009 Super User Posted December 3, 2009 Kent, I started a thread this last spring or summer on these things. Talk about an infestation. They are worse than rabbits. > Quote
aceman387 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 i had read that so far no Asian carp have shown up dead mostly drum and channel catfish so hopefully they haven't reached lake Michigan. Quote
bassdocktor Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 It is a pretty interesting situation. Obviosuly being in Chicago it's been on TV and all over the papers. A couple things that are interesting. First as of like 4:30 this evening they haven't found any of the carp yet. So both good and bad. Also its a sanitary cannal something they seem to kinda down play. It smells during the summer. Just a fun fact since most of you guys will never be on there. A quick final story from the news. Someone was on and was worried that the poison will affect their drinking water. He obviously hasn't ever considered taking a drink from the cannal. There are signs all along the cannal that say "Warning water not suitable for an human body contact" I'll see if I can find a picture of the sign later. Quote

I even have a picture on my phone of those guys fishing with cross-bows and the pic has them jumping all around the boat. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 Sounds like that's about the only option they have. I can't imagine what would happen if they got into the Great Lakes. There'd by billions of them! Quote
aceman387 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 i read this morning in the paper that ten of thousands of fish were killed and so far one Asian carp found dead .they really didn't have much choice with so much to lose .hopefully they haven't made it into lake Michigan Quote

Super User J Francho Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 They should fill the connecting canals with concrete. Quote
moby bass Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Check out this you tube video, especially the part where they electrify the water. This is a serious problem. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 They should fill the connecting canals with concrete. Gov. Granholm is getting close to just that: http://www.abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=9237583 Quote
Simp Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Yeah these things are crazy. It seem the commercial fisherman on the rivers are the only thing keeping there numbers from exploding further. Quote
Fishbone Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 And the goofs in Copenhagen want to control the climate, but they can't keep these fish from the Great Lakes. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 And the goofs in Copenhagen want to control the climate, but they can't keep these fish from the Great Lakes. This is an extremely tough task. You can't blame them for it. Blame the idiot who was rasing Aisian carp too close to the river that got loose during the high water. Then again maybe maybe the someone booted it if they had to issue a permit(?) Quote
