shuddyssoup Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 It just seems to me that his negative response to your feedback was way off line. Seems to me as a professional ebayer he would expect his shipping to be as good as the product. It's all part of the transaction. Who cares what his rating is ... this should be a wake up call that his shipping needs work. NOT ... YOU GOT IT ... IT AIN'T BROKE ... SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL. I bet he'd make a million selling used cars. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted November 13, 2009 Super User Posted November 13, 2009 Could you post the sellers ID? I'd be curious to see his previous feedback. Quote
done Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 truthfully, I would have gone for the neutral rating with a comment on the packaging. In essence, he met his obligation, albeit by the grace of God since that item could have easily been damaged in transit. The way I look at it with any business, I will contact them first when they make a mistake. Mistakes are the opportunity for any business to show its true character. What I would have looked for was him to give a more business like response, an apology, with an acknowledgment that something went wrong with the packaging in this case. Just giving him the negative rating, probably brought out a bit of his "humanity", from his perspective you blindsided him as you did not try to work it out at all before making the rating. So he focused on that instead of your comment and the resulting response was not really great on his part. In the future, I would do as other have suggested, contact the seller first, make at least an attempt to rectify the situation ahead of time. Then if you get a snooty or lack of response, you have full justification for a negative rating. Obviously, your intent was not to hammer the dude but the rating without contacting sort of did that to him. If put in your shoes, if you can change the rating, I would dump it to a neutral, maybe send him a quick note on the change of rating and your opinions in the matter and end it there. Just lets you be the bigger man. Quote
llPa1nll Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 In my opinion I would have messaged the seller notified him of the poor packing and at most gave a neutral rating and explain it was for the packing. I think coming from Ebay a "negative" rating for that is a lil over board. I have always kind of agreed and still do. Like I've said all along I was never sure that my rating was right. That is not the issue nor the reason for the orig post. Perhaps the wording of my questions leaves something to be desired. I highlited my questions in the original post to help clarify. Well I see it this way. Was the seller reacting unprofessionally? Yes, I agree with you it wasnt professional. Did he have a reason to be upset after the initial rating? Yes, I believe so. However I dont think it did any good to for him become unprofessional towards you, nor in the end did it help you becoming unprofessional towards him. In my limited ebay history I wait although sometimes awhile for the seller to make things right. If your dealing with someone that uses ebay as a livelihood they are going to make it right for you. Bassnajr Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Hey... I am a seller on E-Bay with 100% positive feedback. I have worked hard and for many years to attain and keep that status. You admit that you really didn't know how E-Bay works (feedback wise). There are MANY tutorials on "How to.." on the site, specifically on feedback, advising how to handle a situation if you are not pleased. I think you jumped the gun on the negative. A neutral...absolutely!!! It sounds like you were happy with 95% of the transaction, so , thinking now, was that worth a negative to this seller?? About the response the seller is reacting passionately about the feedback, which indicates to me he cares. I have left negatives, and the sellers never even respond back...they don't care, they have my money already!! I think you BOTH got heated up..back and forth, with your responses and cooler heads did not prevail. Just my opinion. PEACE!! AJR Quote

AJR I had a pretty good feel for how it worked as it isn't all that complicated. I just didn't know on the sellers end what implications ( besides the obvious ) that might be involved. I rated it and told them within it and the mandatory subsequent feedback that I was kind of on the fence ratings-wise between neutral and neg. Several have said give them a chance to make it right first and fix the problem. Fix what? I believe the reel is ok. What is there to fix? I didn't want money. Do you think I was going to send it back and have them re-pack it? Like I said had they just "said we booted this one glad it was unbroken" I think they would have mitigated the negative rating all by themselves. I'm glad they reacted like they did as I will never do business again with someone who acts like that. Not to mention it was one toned down apologetic rating out of what thousands? I don't see the major issue on there end. Let me ask a question... Lets say you are a future buyer from them and are thinking of buying a $500 fragile item. Wouldn't you like to know that they might tend to package EXTREMLY poor? The main reason I chose negative was to bring the attention to it that I thought the poor quality deserved. Just my .02 Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 You did what you did because you thought it was justified. It's over , you don't have to keep defending your actions. Just let it go. Quote

Just let it go. Good point well put. No absolute right's or wrong's all opinions are valid. It was one of those should I reply or just let it drop. At the last minute I changed my mind for some reason and posted. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 I just left a negative for a seller. I purchased a used All Star classic rod in "Like new" condition. The rod arrived in a pathetically flimsy cardboard tube that was bent and torn in the middle. The UPS affixed a "I'm sorry we damaged the packaging on your package" sticker. That's amazing in itself. I removed the rod and lo and behold, the rod was undamaged despite the fact the tube was torn in half and bent over AND without the aid of ANY packing at all inside the tube. That's not why I left the negative rating. After removing the rod I found 3" had been cut off the rod butt and the end cap re-affixed. I immediately contacted the seller who has yet to respond. I left the negative primarily for the item not matching description. I probably would've left a Neutral due to the lousy packaging. Quote
