Super User 5bass Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 I'm in the market for a new home computer. I'm not an online game player so I dont need anything too extravagant and I dont do a whole lot of downloading. I guess what's most important is memory, navigating the internet, email, videos, iTunes, etc....and as always, looking to get the most bang for the buck. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 They changed since a little since when I sold them. I would suggest a triple core processor with at least 4GB of ram. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 why not a laptop? I was stuck on the desktops til the wife bought a new Dell Studio and I like it. Dells run pretty, my daughters is 9yrs old now and she has no issues, I had an HP n it fried in less then 2years. I'd say Dell, but if you have the extra $$$ go with an Apple, jmo Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 29, 2009 Super User Posted November 29, 2009 Go with a Dell, you should be able to get a pretty good deal right now with the holidays. Windows 7 is actually a pretty good, better then what I thought. A laptop is a good idea if you plan to use it in different locations, or have wireless around your house. As for Mac's, just not worth the extra cost unless you want to do heavy duty graphics. Don't get stuck on the talk about no virus on Mac's, there are. At a cyber security event a test was put out to hack a Mac system. It took 8 minutes for the system to be completely owned by a hacker. Best thing you can do for security is setup non-admin accounts on your computer for regular use, only use the admin account when you have to. Quote

And the laptops usually have an average life span of 3 years i think? I'm not sure i can't remember but anyways my sister and mom both have that dell inspiron as well as my girlfriend and they seem to have trouble quite a bit and my gateway is running as good as new. It definitely doesn't look as good as dell and it seems to be made poorly but it runs great and I use it for everything that you said, itunes, youtube videos browsing the internet. That kind of stuff. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted November 29, 2009 Author Super User Posted November 29, 2009 I want a desktop/home pc like I have now. I have no need to carry a computer with me anywhere. I'll leave that to the younger folks and the important people. It's hard to argue against a Dell, I know this first hand because the computer I'm currently using is an 8 year old Dell. Yeah, it's OLD!!! I've been having issues for about the past year or so with virtual memory being too low and if I go to eBay or pretty much any site that has a lot of pictures to load, it locks up. Time for it to go. I've had enough. Keep 'em coming fellas, good stuff so far. Quote
Venison Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I agree with Dell. I have a Dell and their customer service is awesome. If I ever have a problem, I just go to their customer service site and enter a live chat with them. My battery charger crapped out a while back. I called them at 3:00pm on a Thursday, and had a new one free of charge in front of my door at 11:00am Friday. Yep, less than 24 hours! Quote
