Super User Wayne P. Posted November 6, 2009 Super User Posted November 6, 2009 I have 2004 with the 5 cylinder in-line engine. Four wheel drive, auto tranny, extended cab, and matching shell. I get about 15 mpg towing a small boat or ATV trailer and about 18 mpg highway not towing. Quote

Big Mike in Fl Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I think a little vomit just snuck up my throat. I'm a die hard chevy man, drive a '99 Z71 1500 silverado, but it is my opinion that vehicles like the colorado are the reason chevy is now bankrupt, when I was in the market for a new truck in'04, it was between a nissan frontier desert runner, and a colorado, and the Nissan won hands down in every comparison (I wound up buying the nissan, and LOVING that truck, until I wrecked it in '07)... the colorados are just junk IMHO and something to be stayed away from! they just don't make them like they used to!!! D4u2s0t Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 When it comes to chevy, you no longer get everything. My SS Cobalt with minimal work in it is faster than cars 3x what I bought it for. But it rattles like a mofo, interior paint is chipping, panels fall off, etc. But the motor/tranny/drivetrain is strong. That's why I bought it, knowing that I would be sacrificing some "build quality" for a solid motor and tranny that will last and perform. Most of the chevy lineup is the same. Interior and general build quality is crap these days, but they still make strong motors and cars that will last you if you know basic auto maintenance. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 7, 2009 Super User Posted November 7, 2009 D4u2s0t, what car is the cobalt ss faster then that cost 3x as much?? Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 I've had mostly Chevy vehicles since 1979. I doubt that I will be buying another ever. Too much junk! Quote
D4u2s0t Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 D4u2s0t, what car is the cobalt ss faster then that cost 3x as much?? Very, very underestimated car. do your research. don't look in the back of your road and track magazine, majority of those times are not what people actually run. And the cobalt is a road course car, not 1/4 mile car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nürburgring_lap_times Cobalt is at 8:22 here. Look at higher times. d**n impressive if you ask me. Majority of people I talk to don't give it a 2nd look, till they see tailights. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 8, 2009 Super User Posted November 8, 2009 Oh I have been around road course racing for over 20 years, no research necessary. In my opinion, your description of the cobalt is a glowing neon sign of what caused the problems with domestic cars. Throwing a higher hp engine in a crappy package, yeah it post some good times but obvious poor fit and finish turns people away. I am not paying good money for cheap fit/finish just because someone put a higher hp engine in. There used to be a yugo with 200 hp and over 1g on the skidpad, which is impressive but still a yugo. Super User Dan: Posted November 8, 2009 Super User Posted November 8, 2009 fwiw: in that chart, the 8:22:85 time is unverified, the verified time is 9:02 Quote
D4u2s0t Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 Did you even read my post? lol... because I pretty much said the same thing. My priority was performance. Believe me, if fit/finish was more important I wouldn't have bought the car lol. What car do you race with? Quote
D4u2s0t Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 fwiw: in that chart, the 8:22:85 time is unverified, the verified time is 9:02 There's videos, and it was on a wet track. If you look into it you'll see it's a legit lap. Basically everyone got all pissy because the lil 4 banger econobox came in with a kick *** time. It's the equivelent of someone catching a record fish, but not actually getting the record because they released it after photos and weighing it. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted November 8, 2009 Super User Posted November 8, 2009 Yeah, I read it, just giving my thoughts. My time in road racing was spent as a corner worker then as a emergency vehicles driver. Only green track time was spent running a full size truck to where a car needed pulled from a gravel trap. Or if I was working corners running across it.... ;D Would have loved to race myself but never had the money. Quote

Get the best of both worlds. Great transmission;engine, along with gorgeous and well built exterior and interior. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted November 8, 2009 Super User Posted November 8, 2009 i'll take your word for it but I'm still not buying a sh*$#@ car just because it's faster than I'll ever need. Quote

If everyone wanted the same thing, there would be 1 car. Some people want a nice build, some people want speed, some people want both. Unfortunately both can be very expensive lol. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted November 9, 2009 Super User Posted November 9, 2009 Bring on the fords..I'll take my Duramax any day of the week... Yes....I'm a drama queen.. Quote
BassDeaton01 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I'd have to say I like Ford trucks better than Chevy's. But I went and bought a Toyota Tacoma. I just wanted a quality truck that would last me a long time. It seems these trucks have a very long life expectancy...haha. Now I definitely like the new Camaros over the new Mustangs. Those things look mean! And not to be mean but I always laugh when I see guys in their mid 20's driving a Cobalt SS trying to be a bada**. ;D Quote

Super User Wayne P. Posted November 9, 2009 Super User Posted November 9, 2009 GMAN, I have a Sierra 1500 4WD also for larger towing needs. It has about the same gas mileage. Quote

Cobalts have a bad name for some reason, most people just ignorantly think they're the same as a cavalier. The new ss' ARE pretty baddass though, many run mid 13's stock which is d**n impressive for the price. 12's are a tune away. The only people that knock them performance wise are the people that don't know anythign about them 8-) Quote
BassDeaton01 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 D4u2s0t-- I'll be honest...I don't know anything about this car and I'm sure you aren't one of the guys my post was about. The car is probably a beast and could out run my 4 cylinder Tacoma anyday ;D My brother is the one that kills me. He buys Honda's and tries to make them fast. He always says "man it's fast for a 4 cylinder" I just have to laugh. Quote
D4u2s0t Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I could say alot about the honda crowds but won't lol... first thing I did when I got the car was take off the big wing, and shortly after i took off the ss badges... that was when all the 17 second ricers stopped trying to race me lol. My car's not crazy fast, mid 13's. I'm past the point in my life where I want to start dumping tons of money into my car... rather buy a new fishing pole lol Quote
BassDeaton01 Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I hear you man! I never understood why people dump so much money into hondas and other cars of that nature. I can understand buying a classic and hooking it up but not a honda ;D 2 Fast @ Furious....inside joke with me and my wife. We always laugh about that movie when we see a honda drive buy with those loud mufflers. Too funny! Quote
