Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 1, 2009 Super User Posted November 1, 2009 i got some nice leather boots. they're nice and black. i'd like to keep them this way for as long as i can. i don't really know anything about treating leather to keep it durable and waterproof. after brief reading, i've found you can rub mink oil in to keep it supple and water resistant? anybody have any tips? Red Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 I always used saddle soap. It works great on a new baseball glove too. To keep them black just use black kiwi shoe polish. Talk to a soldier and you can learn the tricks so make them shine if thats your thing. Cliff Quote
Super User Micro Posted November 1, 2009 Super User Posted November 1, 2009 What kind of black boots? Boots for wearin' or boots for showin'? If they are for showin', just use Kiwi. If they are for wearin', like in the woods, SnoSeal is great. http://www.atsko.com/products/waterproofing/sno-seal.html Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 2, 2009 Author Super User Posted November 2, 2009 they're kinda for showin' and kinda for wearin'. they will be worn a lot, to school and out and about, but not in the woods, i have hiking boots for that. i read briefly about saddle soap and saw snoseal in a google search results list. i'll check em both out and i'll run to the store to get some kiwi polish to keep em shiny hmmm i just did a google search of saddle soap and all the link i read on the first page recommend not to use it... they say it only forces dirt into the leather and its alkalinity is damaging to the leather. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted November 2, 2009 Author Super User Posted November 2, 2009 snoseal for work and outdoor boots, mink oil for dress boots. mink oil for just waterproofing/conditioning them right? i don't want my boots mirror shiny but i do want to keep em nice and black and a little shiny, so i guess just a little bit of Kiwi will do the trick right? i'm not gonna spend 3 hours and 87 billion layers on them, but just enough to shine them up.
