What are some of the strangest things/animals you have seen while sitting in the tree stand? I was out last week and saw a wild hog. I didnt even know these things were around Blacksburg, SC where I was hunting. Apparently, a lot of other people have seen them and are scratching their heads about where they came from. I also saw a red fox and the only reason I didn't shoot it was because it was only 730 am and I didnt want to ruin my chances of seeing any deer. I'm just curious to hear what some of you seasoned hunters have seen over the years...

I was archery hunting behind my parents house about 10 years ago and I saw an animal that I still don't know what it was.  It was about the size of a fox, it was gray and had real fine fur.  I watched it for about 20 minutes trying to figure out what it was and never did figure it out.  I've hunted the same area hard since and never seen it again.  It was about 15 yards from me a lot of the time so I got a pretty good look at it.

Other than that one time I shot a squirrel that ran into a pile of tree tops.  I got down on my hands and knees , looked into tree tops and was staring a bobcat in the face.  I pulled my .22 up in the direction of the cat and backed up thinking to myself "your welcome for supper."

last year, my buddy had a bald eagle land about 10 feet above his head in the stand...you wanna talk about a cool experience, he wouldn't shut up about it for a while.

I've seen coyotes ( just starting to encroach on this area), bobcats, various birds...had a pair of ducks buzz me (about 3 feet form my head) one really foggy morning.

bassdeaton, hogs will roam as far north as the carolinas, they are more common down here than deer, and if you are hunting for meat, you'd do well to get one, talk about great food!

I'm fairly confident i saw a hog that was pushing 600-700lbs one year, it was far away (maybe 1/2 mile) and looked like a black cow moving through the marsh, but there aren't any cows out there, so it's the only thing I could think of, and there are rumors of some being out there that big.

The strangest experience...

When I got out of the Army in 2003, I picked up an M44 Mossin Nagant (7.62x54R) on the way home, and I was set on using it that fall for whitetail. I adjusted the open sights in well enough that I didn't need the bayonet extended, and was pretty confident in it. Opening day came, and I had a terrible case of the flu, but in PA unless you're 6 feet under, you don't miss it. ;D  I pretty much crawled to a blow down a few hundred yards from my parents house where a trail ran by a creek. I was fading in and out of it, about ready to call it quits, when a 7 piont walks into veiw on my left. He would look away, and I'd pull the rifle up a little, and we played that game for a while until I had it shouldered. So I'm sitting on this log with my back against the stump, and my legs crossed on the log about 3' in the air with the rifle pointed 90 degrees to my left. I was so excited, I didn't compensate for the recoil, I always used my 44-40, which kicks like a .22. Now I'm shooting something a little more potent than a 30-06 with an 18" barrel and a steel butt plate. When I touched the rifle off, the recoil knocked me off of the tree, and was way too much movement, and I puked all over myself as I lay on my back. My dad radios, and asked me if I got one, and I said I think so, but I need help. A few minutes later, he's looking over me and said "By god, that gun kills at one end, and cripples at the other", after I verified which end I was on, I found my buck exactly where he was shot.

Sitting 16' up in my deer stand i saw a turkey bust out of the woods. I was amazed to see a coyote on its tail. The turkey took about 100 yards to get airborn, dont know why. During the chase the coyote ran right under a cow. The heffer never even flinched. Just thought it was strange, but apperently the cow couldnt care less about the coyote. Oh yeh the coyote ended up missing the tukey as it finaly rose from the ground , by about 3'.

Back when I used to hunt, 10+ years ago, we often saw armadillo's as we hunted down in Southern Missouri.  They were much fun to shoot at to pass the time.  The locals encouraged us to shoot every one we saw.

A couple of years ago, I was deer hunting on my grandfathers land, it was blowing snow, just miserable.  I'm sitting there in my tree stand, coming in and out of sleep, when out of no where I hear a twig snap.... don't ask me how I heard it.  So I slowly start looking around and all of a sudden I look down and there is a cow elk.  They put these about 100 miles from our property, I hunt in the middle of kansas, so i about pooped.  Then I'm watching this cow and a bull walks right under my stand, I could have taken a step down and touched his antlers with my foot.  I had heard people say that they had seen them but hell they see alot of things.

M44 Mossin Nagant (7.62x54R)... Now I'm shooting something a little more potent than a 30-06

;D

The 7.62x54R cartridge is not as 'potent' as the .30-06.  The .30-06 cartridge features a longer case (63 mm vs 54 mm) and therefore the capacity to contain more powder and produce more velocity and energy.

A 7.62x54R cartridge loaded with a 180 gr. bullet will chrono around 2600 FPS with approx. 2750 ft-lbs of ME.  A .30-06 loaded with the same bullet will chrono at approx. 2900 FPS with approx. 3300 ft-lbs. of ME.

If one had a newer rifle chambered in 7.62x54R, with handloading you could approach the ballistics of the .308 Win (7.62 NATO).  But I wouldn't shoot anything but light handloads in a Nagant.

Where I have hunted alot of us locals new each other, well one fella brought a friend, and he was cocky. the dude had evrything. he looked like he was going to Iraq, well anyway he kept talken about slamming the monster buck, and bragged about all he gets is bigguns.

So we aked him if he eats deer? NO he says, deer sucks, I hunt for antlers. well this didn't go over well with all of us because we mainly hunt meat not trophy, doesn't mean we'd pass up on a big one. well after about an hour of this crap we all start heading off when all we hear is a cussen fit from Hell, turns out the big fancy trophy hunter for got his gun ;D

We never saw him the rest of the year after we laughed about it more loudly than his cussen fit. Of course non of us got anything that opening morning,Im sure we spooked off everything but it was worth it :)

That round was first used and issued by Russia.   Its very similar to a 30-06 in ballistics.  Known and used by snipers in late 1800's.

The nickname of that round is the "russian 30-06".   One of the few bottleneck rounds still used by the military.

This round was ahead of its time.
