CanalStalkin Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 A little background on this dude. He was found wandering the streets about starved to death, hes 3 months old and only weighs 8 pounds. Boxer mixed with a little pit they say, hes just the sweetest thing with the most awesome personality and I think is just gonna be the perfect dog. I knew I had to get em right when I saw the add. Here are a few pictures. He wont look like this for long. Went and loaded up on the best stuff to get him going and also some obedience training when he beefs up a bit. his name is Waylon Quote
adclem Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 He is adorable and its awesome when you stumble across something like him and everything just clicks. A new friend for life. Later, Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 18, 2009 Super User Posted October 18, 2009 I always wonder if dogs like that develop a special relationship with the people who rescue them. I always thought that maybe dogs just know what you did for them and it makes them more loyal than a regular dog might be. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 18, 2009 Super User Posted October 18, 2009 You did take him to a vet didn't you ? The little guy needs professional help to get him healthy . When I found my pup , he had heart worms so bad that they had to keep him for a week to treat him. Quote
Fat-G Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Nice pup! Hope she gets all fat and healthy 8-) Quote

The vet at the shelter gave him a once over and his first puppy shots, when its time for his next shots I will be getting the heartworm exam and put him on the preventative. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 18, 2009 Super User Posted October 18, 2009 Hmm.. Hope it works out for you. You got a lot of great advice earlier, which you have chosen to ignore. I don't recall that mix being mentioned. : Quote
Super User Dan: Posted October 18, 2009 Super User Posted October 18, 2009 wait, what? you can't be talking about this thread? Who cares if he didn't get a dog that was recommended. Clearly this dog showed up at the right time and he decided to rescue it. Good for him. Better to rescue a dog that isn't the exact breed that you want than let him get put down while waiting for a corgi or whatever breed, especially if you aren't solidly set on that breed. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 18, 2009 Super User Posted October 18, 2009 wait, what? ????????????? explain please. Quote
CanalStalkin Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 Hmm.. Hope it works out for you. You got a lot of great advice earlier, which you have chosen to ignore. I don't recall that mix being mentioned. : I'm not sure what advice I ignored, I got alot of great opinions and took them all into consideration. I didn't set out looking for a mut, but after spending time with this one at the pound I felt I had a bond with him and gave him a great home. So, sorry if I offended anyone who posted in my other thread. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted October 19, 2009 Super User Posted October 19, 2009 Speaking for myself, I'm not offended. I might even get to the point were I'm downright impressed. I know you were thinking of getting a Heeler, but if I had been in your shoes, I'd probably be sitting here right now with the same dog you've got. That little guy is going to have some health issues, if nothing else from the starvation alone. But it sounds like you've got a vet involved in that part of his life. And Waylon could have some issues in his training as well. Its hard to tell if he was abandoned prior to the first 8 - 10 weeks of life where he really needed to be with his mother and siblings. This time is very important for puppies to learn socializing skills. Certainly the fact that he was on his own so early in life is going to put him behind in his development that he'll need later in life. But I'm sure if you put in the time required, he will get over those hurdles as well. Old Fart Advice Alert!!!!! Having said all of that, I hope you know that the commitment you were going to make with that Heeler pup just got greatly multiplied. A well adjusted healthy puppy is a big chore, much like having a human child. Its just that a dog happens to have fur and will most likely always walk on all fours. But Waylon is going to be like adopting a special needs child, warts and all. He is probably going to have a better life if for no other reason that he will be getting fed regularly and will have shelter. But if he is going to have the best life possible, you are going to have to do a lot of research and put in a lot of time to help him become a well behaved and sociable adult. Once you've helped him get to that point, he will have a happy life. I'll wish both of you all the luck in the world. Keep us up to date on Waylon's progress. I want that chance to be impressed. I'd be happy to discuss any issues you're having along the way, so if you need to, please PM me. Quote
Infidel. Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I think it is great that you saved this pup over getting one from a breeder. Now just get him a couple of cheese burgers and he'll be set If he wasn't a guy I was going to say that he can be on America's Next Top Model. Quote

NewAngler Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I always wonder if dogs like that develop a special relationship with the people who rescue them. I always thought that maybe dogs just know what you did for them and it makes them more loyal than a regular dog might be. SHort answer (for my dog at least) is yes. I rescued one of my dogs from a lady that basically fed the dogs, and kept them in the crate all day and night. She was 7 months when we got her, and WOULD NOT leave my side for the first 3 months. The only thing i could think of was that I was the one to play with her at the place, the one to pick her up, walks her everyday, etc. I did it all. Now, she seems to be a spoiled %$#@!@. Ha, I think they do appreciate you a little more. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 19, 2009 Super User Posted October 19, 2009 I don't see how that could be a boxer mix. Looks almost like more pit bulls and not an ounce of boxer in it. Congrats on your rescue and here to many years of friendship. Quote
CanalStalkin Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 thats what I was thinking too. Only boxer trait I see is the coloring maybe? and the black on the snout. I do plan on spending alot of time socializing him with other animals and people due to the fact I want to take him everywhere. That's why I am going to get him started in the obedience stuff which will involve me, along with other dogs and people to help socialize. I dont plan on just having a dog I watch tear crap up in the backyard. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted October 19, 2009 Super User Posted October 19, 2009 Well, Boxers do have that coloring, but so does full blooded pits. Judging from the pic, the head looks nothing like a boxer. Check it out for yourself http://pitbull_love.tripod.com/picsofdogs/id6.html http://www.sfgate.com/blogs/images/sfgate/pets/2009/08/14/Boxer__28dog_29.jpg Look at your pups head between eyes then look at steepness of the boxer's between eyes in pic above. There nothing wrong with your puppy, I just cant find a characteristic that it might be boxer mix. Good luck with the obedience school, I tried my 3 year in that class..lets just say he was the class's troublemaker. ;D The boy grab the thing your suppose jump over and drugged it around the yard. LOL. ;D ;D But it a good idea to get your dog to tried socialized and get used to being with other people. Since you rescued him lets hope he doesn't have bad memory in his head from being mistreated. Quote
CanalStalkin Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 lets hope Waylon isn't the class clown LOL. And I agree he has pit in him definitely. I am just going on what he was listed as at the pound. I couldn't care less what he is though, as long as we can get him healthy and 100%. He just has the coolest personality, Just sad someone dumped him out on the street. Quote
TommyBass Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I ended up keeping a stray that was wandering around my housse one time. You could tell she had had pups in the past, most likley someone dumped her...which I cannot stand to even think of > But anyways she was unhealthy and on her last leg, hair was all wirey. Once we took her in and fed her she became one of the most loyal / loving dogs I've owned. She stayes outside and has a HUGE underground fence... with a warm garage (doggy door) and plenty of food / water. Not a lick of trouble comes from her, one of the best deceisions I've made. I'm not even sure what mine is, lab something mix. I'd be willing to bet you'll love yours too. Quote
