I found this listing on another site. 2006 Ranger Z20 for $3500.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/spo/1399007876.html

I emailed to see what kind of response I'd get. These people have no shame, stating a lost life in Iraq is the cause for the boat sale. Here is the response...

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my boat. The boat has been meticulously maintained and also stored inside and never left in the water for a extended period of time. You will not find a cleaner 06 Z20 for this price with only 92 hours of use. Only used in freshwater. If you decide to buy it, you'll receive all the papers, owner manual, keys, a buy-sell contract already signed by me and the clear title. For this transaction I want to use ebay because I want to provide you a fast and very secure way. They will handle the transaction for me. You will make the payment to ebay and they will hold the money until you receive and inspect the boat. Only after you receive the boat and you inspect it (you have 7 days for inspection) ebay will release the payment to me. The inspection time period will begin as soon as you receive the boat at your address. Meanwhile eBay will hold the money into a trust account. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the boat before you decide to buy it. This way we are both protected : i will know that i have a serious buyer who has the money to pay me and you will be able to see and inspect the boat before buying it . The final price is $ 3,500 with shipping costs and insurance included. The price is low because I want to sell the boat very quickly. My husband died in Iraq 3 months ago and I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Nevada. Now as a woman i don't need it.

If you are really interested in purchasing the boat please send me your full name, shipping address and your phone number. Ebay will give you all the details regarding the shipping and payment.

I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

Regards!

Usually they use a pic of someone else's boat, motorcycle ect..then hope you send the $$$ and you get nada..

The old sayin really applies in cases like this, if it's to good to be true, it usually is... ;)

Figured as much.....What threw me off was the ebay thing where the money doesn't actually go through until the title actually gets changed over to you and you take it home.I'm guessing the scam is once to sent the money to ebay, they already got the money regardless rather you see it or not.

I think I'll stick with the old way of "Seeing the boat before hand in person, before exchanging or sending any money".

I don't know - I once heard about a lady who had a vintage Corvette for sale - the guy stopped by to see it and found it to be in mint condition and low mileage - he asked for the price and she said $500 - he said surely you can get more than that for it - she said that's okay, my husband ran off with his secretary and told me to sell it and send him half the money :D

Where have I heard of this story before? I think I saw it on TV.

Anyways, does anyone know how they can go through with this scam? I doubt anyone is stupid enough to fall for it, but there are some cases.

I've heard of at least 2 people that fell for it. At the time they "thought" they were getting a great deal on a sportbike...

How do they get scammed though? What is the process? Do they grab the money from you and run away?  :-/

Obviously this is a scam, but every once and while something weird like this does happen.

My father is an Antique dealer and had a woman come in with a whole bunch of classic and collectible records to sell. She wanted $300 for everything. My Dad looked them over and realized there was a least a $7000.00 profit to be made.

Turns out that the woman had caught her Husband cheating, and this was her way of getting him back.  :D

It's called an advanced fee scam.  Once they get the money you will never hear from them again. If you guys think this doesn't happen a lot every day think again.   I work for the FBI and we get dozens of people who write in saying they were scammed.  The saddest part is that the $3,500 is not even a lot of money compared to the others I have seen.  Think over $10,000. (Even over $50,000) :-[

I never thought I'd get a response, but I did!  Even though the ad originated in NY, she states it's here in CA.  lol.  Stay tuned for more...

Hello again,

The boat is at eBay's shipping center in San Jose, CA ( it's were I lived before I moved ) and from there it will be shipped to my buyer's address. The boat was listed for sale in an auction on eBay but I have removed the add because of some 'serious' buyers. They promissed they will buy the boat from me but they proved not to have the money to pay for it. I have registered the boat with eBay's Vehicle Protection Program and they work only with das auto shippers, so a local pick-up is not an option. This transaction is covered by ebay's purchase protection program up to 50,000 USD and if something goes wrong in this transaction you will be fully refunded. On the invoice you will have the details on how to make a refundable payment and shipping back the boat will be my concern. I strongly assure you it will not be the case for a refund. I have used the eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection in the past and all my transaction ended succesfully. You pay to eBay and they will transfer the funds to me only after you get the boat. Shipping will be door to door, to your home address, somebody must be home when the boat arrives.

If you wish to proceed with the purchase, please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay right away.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Carol

Is there any law enforcement agency that is willing to pursue

these people? I used to forward the Nigerian deals to the FBI,

but never received any replies, so I gave up.
