Hi everyone this is my first post and I'd just like to say this forum is incredible and I love it.  I use the search tool on a daily basis lol.  Anyway I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answers to.  First has anyone found the Gulp Alive Minnows to be effective?  I mean more effective than say a regular superfluke with some mega strike on it?  The idea intrigues me but 20 bux is a lil much.

Second I am currently using Power Pro 10lb red braid.  I like it a lot but my question is should I be using a fluorocarbon leader for less visibility?  The diameter of the power pro is quite thin (2lbs) and red supposedly disappears under water first. I seem to catch fish just fine but I'm always looking to improve. Just wondering your thoughts.

P.S. How big do you guys think this is? didn't have a scale

THX

Welcome to the forum. Glad you joined us.

As for using Gulp! Alive?  Nope.  Not yet.

When I do use Gulp! products I seem to get a lot of bream and Crappie strikes and catch those beautiful catfish.

If you try them be sure to let us know how you do.

You can use whatever line you want, but if you use braid you may want to use a mono or flouro leader.

May I suggest using mono for treble hook baits; flouro and copoly for just about anything; and braid for heavy cover and deep water?

You may have better success fishing ponds with an 8 pound test on your spinning rig and 10 pound test on your baitcaster.

By the looks of the picture you seem to be doing well. Very well.  So keep up the good work and let us know how you do and post those pics.   :D

Welcome aboard!

Nice fish, great pic.

I would guess the bass 3 1/2 - 4 lbs.

Thx for the advice guys.  So nobody's tried those gulp alive minnows yet?  I'm talking about those ones that come in the bucket.   And is the consensus that I should use fluoro  on the whole spool or just a leader on my 10lb red braid?

I know saltwater Gulp works great for fluke and other saltwater species, but for Largemouth I don't think its anything great. Most gulp I'd describe as a bait that lacks action, but has incredible scent. Now for some fish species I find scent tends to be more important, such as fluke for example, now with Largemouth on the other hand, I find action to be more important. This is just my opinion but I have come to believe this throughout the years of fishing in saltwater and freshwater. So I'd say stick with zoom super flukes for largemouth and don't bother with Gulp.

Now if your going for walleye from what I hear it works great, and I know for sure fluke love it. But I find the bass get lured into biting by action majority of the time over scent and Im almost positive the super fluke has more action then the gulp version. Good luck.

my catch ratio with gulp minnows is no different than with roboworms...sometimes worse. so, no, i'm not a fan...especially considering the expense and hassle of gulp.

my guess is 4lbs for the bass.

I use gulp minnows as my anti-skunk bait at the lake I fish at. I normally use Sufix Elite as my line of choice with no leader. I usually rig the 4 inch minnow with a 1/4 ounce jig head. I've caught walleye, hybrids, bass, sand bass, channel cats and largemouth bass. I even fish the 2 1/2 inch model under a bobber for bluegill and crappie and it works well.

As ways to improve i usually fish it with a slow retrieve at first and vary it if I get no bites. You never said how you normally rig yours.

Hmmmm.  So we've got a couple guys that like the gulp minnows and a couple that don't.  I guess I should probably just try it and see.  How's the action on those 4" gulp minnows?  I usually rig my flukes weightless texas style sometimes with a baitholder, but i may try the jighead idea.  The bass in the pic was caught on a mann's hardnose baby bass fluke.

Also, I guess it seems that line doesn't matter as much as I think it does.  Everyone seems to just use what they like.  I was just concerned about the fish possibly seeing the line (10lb red braid).  Its probably another one of those things I should just try.  I'm gonna get some fluro and see.

Nope.

The overwhelming majority of people on this Forum don't like or fish

Gulp, they just haven't responded and generally passover any thread

with "Gulp" in the title.
