An AAS in business will get you a little further than the average joe but nothing to sneeze at.

My wife finished with an AAS in business and an AAS in accounting last year and with several years experience in the field she is making pretty good money for our area.  She is now about halfway through a BS in business and plans on getting her MBA.  Even at this point in her college her work has already sat down with her and discussed management positions.   She works in IS in our local credit union and the BS is the only way the good, high paying jobs will come.

Someone mentioned 55,000 as a rate of pay for the AAS.  If you make that much in my area with an AAS you have some MAJOR connections.  What I'm saying is that the pay will be subject to the local pay rates in your area so don't be discouraged by what you may make.  Also remember that it takes time so don't get discouraged.

BTW, go for the degree!!!!  My wife talked me into going to college and I'm almost finished with my AAS in Administration of Justice and I'm having the time of my life doing it!

I got my BS in Business Admin. back in 1986. About six months out of college I got hired part-time to work on a CAD system which had nothing to do with my degree. About a year later I was hired full time and have been there 22 years now. My degree didn't help me get my current job, but if I didn't have it I would be making about 10% to 15% less than what I do now.

I think the most important part is getting a degree with which to use, not as a ending point, but as a starting one.

Whether its retail management, accounting, or some other degree, and whether you obtain an associates or bachelors, you'll have a base to continue from if and when the job market requires it.

Long gone are the days when I was young, when a guy could graduate from high school, walk into the nearest GM of Ford factory and have a good paying job for the next 30 years or so.  Right or wrong, we seem destined to become a service based economy.  Unless your sights are set on making $10 p/hr for most of your working life, a college degree is the key to moving ahead.

This is a great read for people like me who are going into business keep it up guys.

Good for you.  Folks taking the plunge into self employment is one of the things that makes this a great country.

So I assume you've got your lawyer and accountant both on the same pages as to entity type (C-Corp, S-Corp, or LLC) to give your the best of liability protection and tax treatment.

Have you gotten your business plan finished yet?  Cash flow projections?  Got started on the different licenses, insurance policies, bookkeeping system?  How about all those employee forms along with the attendant filings for a Federal Employer ID #, state numbers, unemployment insurance?

Okay, I'm just picking on you a touch.  Isn't it amazing all of the things you've got to do just to open the doors?  Anyhow, with all sincerity, I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks Lund though when I said business I meant degree, I'm not starting one yet.

Of course I plan to start my own business some where in the not to distant future after college and after I get a little experience under my belt.

But this is a great read for someone going into to business school or planing to start their own.
