I.rar Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 what do you eat when youre tight on cash? im not talking fast food , but something you actually cook at home. something less than $5 for 2+ people. right now im destroying some mac and cheese with tuna and some hot sauce. tastes great for less than a buck a bowl. another thing i liked to do when i was trying to gain weight a few years ago was brown some ground beef with mojo (marinade) and a cayanne pepper. when its almost done , throw a can of tuna (drained of course) in there and simmer for a few minutes then throw that on top of some white rice. amazing. my father in law makes some great stuff with ramen noodles too. so what do you guys make? daviscw Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 I live off of Zatarain's rice and beans, dirty rice, jambalaya, and gumbo mix. Spaghetti is really cheap too. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Grilled cheese and french fries, cheap and easy. Kraut Dogs instead of chili dogs. Sloppy joes and fries. Love fried Bologna sandwiches. I like to buy the 16 oz Hillshire Farms sausage for 2.50, cook half, grilled BBQ with a package of .88 package of fried rice, spanish rice, or make your own rice. Too easy to be cheap when you don't have to cook for a bunch! Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Buy a whole chicken and a large pack of Bigo Spanish yellow rice. (Publix sells both) Boil the chicken until done. Put chicken in strainer to cool. After cooling, remove all skin and meat from bone. Save 2 cups of the chicken broth from the pot you boiled it in. Cook the yellow rice per instructions on packet BUT substitute the water with the chicken broth you saved. When rice is done, add the cut up, bite sized chicken pieces. This will be easily 3-5 meals for 2 people and very good too. I add salt, pepper and hot sauce to my portion. Total cost for a decent chicken and rice is about 8-9 bucks, tax included. Not bad for about a dollar a meal per person. Quote
frogtog Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Collard sandwiches and sweet water for dessert. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Large carton of eggs, sack of potatoes and loaf of store brand bread. Cube a couple potatoes and cook'em. Scramble 4 eggs but add 1/8-1/4 cup milk to mak'em fluffy. Toast 2 slices of bread. Shouldn't cost more than 7-8 bucks and will last 5 days for 2 people. Now that's pretty darn cheap for breakfast at less than a dollar a day for two people. Your main goal is to buy in bulk and STAY AWAY from fast food and restaurants. Generally, you can make the same thing at home 2-4 times for the same price you spend for one dinner at a restaurant. Quote
Branuss04 Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Top Ramen!! It's like the Meca of cheap foods Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Here is another great money saver. Pack of Culprit worms, one 3/0-4/0 hook and one 1/8 weight. Use the above to catch 4-5 bass at 1.5-2 pounds apiece. Fillet bass, cook and enjoy. 5 bass will last 10 meals, especially if you fry the fillets into nuggets and add some potatoes from your breakfast sack of potatoes. Now you are eating pretty much for less than 50 cents a meal. OR One 10 pound bass will do the same. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 21, 2009 Super User Posted September 21, 2009 Here's another tip... STAY AWAY from restaurants and fast food. Cook at home, it cheaper and healthier. Quote

bmadd Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 Stove Top Stuffing is an excellent filler. Add it as a side to whatever main dish you want to have and it will fill you up no matter what else you're eating. Boxes of the stuff go from .96-1.60ish. Not bad. I also love reubens. I buy a loaf of rye, a pack of sliced swiss cheese, a jar of kraut, a bottle of thousand island, and a ton of Buddig corned beef. That budding is no where near as good as deli corned beef but one pack will make a sandwich for .55! Quote

Not bad for about a dollar a meal per person. Don't save just two cups...... Save it all! You've got the start of Chix Noddle Soup. I always make an entire batch starting with a full chicken in a big old pot of water. Once you've pulled the chicken out, cook up the celery and carrots in the broth. Remove the veggies when they're cooked, and set them aside. One last thing is to de-bone and cut up the chicken. Once all of that is done, just divide into serving size containers with equal portions of everything, and put into the freezer for later use. All that needs to be added is the noodles (or rice). I can usually get a nice dinner for the wife and I, and about six 2 qt. containers in the freezer. Great for those winter days when a cold is coming on. Quote
