Super User Dan: Posted September 25, 2009 Super User Posted September 25, 2009 I've got some bad poison ivy as a result of fishing with shorts on and not being careful where I walked. If any of you get poison ivy really bad like I do, I found some pretty good stuff to help alleviate the itchiness. It's a spray which is nice because spreading gel or lotion on bad poison ivy just plan feels gross. It cools and kind of numbs the itching. It also seems to dry it out pretty well. Anybody else have any good treatments? Quote
Quitlimpin Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Dawn dish soap. I got into some posion ivy big time earlier this summer. Buddy of mine told me about the Dawn. I know it seems kinda far fetched but it works great! Quote

I know it seems kinda far fetched but it works great! That makes sense, it is supposed to cut through grease and as far as I know, the stuff in poison ivy that makes you itchy is basically an oil. preach4bass Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 If I think I've been exposed I get to the shower immediately and wash in Dawn dish detergent. It cuts through grease, and since the oil on the poison ivy is what irritates the skin, it washes it off. Next, I start taking a series of pills that I get by perscription (steroid pack) from the doctor. You take 6 the first day, 5 the second day, and so on. Every time I go to the doctor I get him to write me a prescription for them so I'll have them on hand. I even got my wife's gynocologist to write me a prescription for them! ;D Quote

I used to get poison ivy REALLY bad when I was little. Like blisters and puss bad. And it would get EVERYWHERE. I've taken the steroids before and they are awesome but if I recall correctly they taste terrible and I don't want to visit the doctor just for poison ivy. Quote
looking4structure Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I use a thick cream called Ivyrest.Worked pretty good for me.Next time ill have to try dawn. Thanks for the helpful info. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted September 25, 2009 Super User Posted September 25, 2009 Prednisone is a wonderful steroid. I have to take it when I get into the ivy. If I know I have been in/around it, I use a product called Tecnu (sp?). For those who do not know already, when you are taking a shower with the intent of washing off poison ivy oils, shower in the coldest water that you can tolerate. A hot shower might feel nice, but it also opens up your pores and allows the oils to get in. Cold water will keep them closed up. Quote
bowfish12 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Scratch it open and rub bleach in it. It will burn but you won't itch anymore. Quote
RobbyZ5001 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I usually pee on it and if I can't I will get a friend to pee on it. Quote
Super User Tin Posted September 25, 2009 Super User Posted September 25, 2009 I usually pee on it and if I can't I will get a friend to pee on it. Get in a pool and scratch..the chlorine dries it right out.... Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 25, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 25, 2009 Wayne, I've tried that Tecnu stuff and it just didn't work for me although my friend swears by it. My brother used bleach one time and by scratching it open it got into his bloodstream and started showing up all over the place. I remember chlorine helping a lot, maybe I need to make friends with someone with a pool. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 25, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 25, 2009 Get drunk and wing it.... It's getting better now but two nights ago that probably would have helped a lot. Quote

aceman387 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 if the ivy is itching bad put the itchy area under hot as water as you can stand for as long as you can stand it .at first it brings intense itching to the area but dissipates as soon as you move it out from under the hot water and you will be itch free for hours. Slip Gun Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Jewlweed. I used to play in the woods all the time and get the worst poison ivy. I figured out when I was about 8 that this plant rubbed on where you wandered through the poison ivy will keep it from cropping up. Not a month and a half ago I realized I had my hand in some poison ivy, I broke off some of this plant rubbed its between my hands and continued biking, dint wash my hands till that night and had no signs of it. Make sure you rub the stalk the juice is what you need. Quote
Simp Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I hate PI something fierce. I can still get it REALLY RALLY BAD! Earlier this year I had a serious case again. I had it in a couple spots and I didn't itch it at all but it wouldn't go away. Then finally something must have happened and it spread everywhere. It took a very long time to finally get to go away completly. So now won't even allow people to come over if I know they have it. I take it that seriously! > Quote
pa mountain man Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 I don't get it(knocking on wood) My buddy got it bad one time, and had a brilliant idea...
