Super User Bassn Blvd Posted September 17, 2009 Super User Posted September 17, 2009 HIGH SCHOOL - 1959 vs. 2009 Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack. 1959 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2009 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. 1959 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Bainza Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I saw this on another fourm a couple months ago. Still a good read again though. Quote
done Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Something I remember from HS in '93 in relation to scenario 2. 2 kids fighting, 1 is whooped pretty good. Instead of handshake victor, pile drives beaten kid onto marble floor in freedom shrine. Kid spends 3 weeks in intensive care, other one goes to jail. (actually seen this) and to add to Scenario 3, 1959 ...father paddles Jeffrey when he gets home. Jeffrey REALLY never does it again. Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I wish I went to high school in 1959. Except for the fact that I'd probably be dead now. Quote

Super User bilgerat Posted September 17, 2009 Super User Posted September 17, 2009 Funny as hell but true. Tonight is back to school night at my daughters' middle school. My wife dreads this night because she thinks I pick on the staff because I ask a lot of questions and (respectfully) criticize what I think are asinine policies or procedures. My big sore point is the practice that's prevalent in public schools of allowing disruptive kids to remain in class while they are given every leeway. I'm sure some of them have genuine problems but the majority of them just need a good old fashioned a** kicking. Fat chance that's gonna happen. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted September 17, 2009 Super User Posted September 17, 2009 Gawd that's OLD~! As a kid in the 50's I can say for a FACT that's how things were, as I'm others here remeber it. We need to get back to some of the 50's ways, amoung other things. Quote

tbird Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 My wife teaches middle school and some of the crazy things that go on there are ridiculous. A teacher cannot touch a kid , this goes for breaking up a fight, a pat on the back etc.. She had a student that sat down in the hallway and refused to move she had to call the campus cop to come get the kid.I told her I'm glad I wasn't in your shoes because I would have jerked him up hard by the collar. Also if a student regardless of how dangerous or disruptive they are is kicked out of school the school loses money for that student?? I've had my a** paddled a few times in school and I grew up fine ...Go figure T Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted September 19, 2009 Super User Posted September 19, 2009 Ever had your knuckles whacked with one of those wood rulers with the metal edges...? it hurts..lol Also got a paddleing with the famous paddle with the holes in it...most usually don't mess up again after get swatted... Super User burleytog Posted September 19, 2009 Super User Posted September 19, 2009 Brought my shotgun to school in the 90's... Yep, wasn't unusual to see a few kids get off the bus a few times a week carrying a shotgun or .22. We (the FFA) would set up a range on the hill above the school and have shooting matches during our club meetings. I carried a sword to school in 7th grade. It was Halloween and I was a pirate. Nothing was said. I loaned my knife to countless teachers over the years (started carrying a knife in 3rd grade). Graduated HS in 95. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 19, 2009 Super User Posted September 19, 2009 I'll bet there are also more pedophiles as teachers now than in the 50's too. I wonder how they were brought up? Must have been something screwy before the 00' also. Quote

Must have been something screwy before the 00' also. Dan I do not think so. I have talked with my grandfather at length about this type of stuff. If you look at the reporting, they do not catch that many but when they do, it hits the papers 6 minutes after the cuffs are on. Geraldo is on their parents doorstep 35 minutes later and we heard about it for the next 40 days every 25 minutes. In the old days they just did not report it past maybe the local level. The teacher would be sacked, go to jail, and the entire nation did not hear about it. In the old days, it was easier to become a teacher. There were not phsyc evals, electronic criminal records, adn the strict educational requirements we have today. That being said teaching is a field that will always attract those types (which IMO are a very small minority), it puts them in close contact with kids on a daily basis. The only hope we have is that they will be quickly caught and harshly punished. Quote

=Matt 5.0= Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Pretty much. 1973 F100 with a shotgun rack and an old mattress in the bed. I lasted in that town from 1980 til 1993... that was enough. Quote

Super User cart7t Posted September 20, 2009 Super User Posted September 20, 2009 1959 = The majority of households in the US were a one worker family. Dad worked, Mom stayed home and took care of the kids. 2009 = As long as no ones been laid off, it's a 2 worker household. It has been for at least 20 + years now. Kids are raised in day cares. Mommy and Daddy have "careers". Those same parents have no problem parking their kids in front of TV sets or Video games to keep them busy. With so little time spent with their children to teach them the rights from wrongs, they invented the term "quality time" as an excuse for that lack of upbringing their children have had. The kids, in the meantime, sit in front of the TV and watch smarmy TV shows where the cute, obnoxious kids run the household and the parents are imbiciles. It's no wonder the kids have little to no respect for their elders? Why should they? The parents, feeling guilty for their lack of time with their own children, fail to properly punish their kids for their bad behavior. No, instead they try and be their friends and reason with them and give them minimal timeouts. If something happens at school, they rush in to save the day, lawyer in tow and attempt to displace blame away from their child and onto school officials. Yep, Little Johnny or Suzy can't be held accountable for their actions. It's not their fault they've spent their time learning right from wrong from a TV set. Little Johnny or Suzy have no concept of taking responsibility for their actions at all. If they misbehave it's obviously somebody elses fault. It's a learned experience. Unfortunately, the reaction from schools these days is often over reaction. It's the end result of too many out of control students with lousy parents who will take the childs side over the school because of their own guilt over what a wizz poor job they did raising their kids. The school systems are merely trying to survive given the student body they have to work with. Its the cause and effect of this society today. I'm glad I'm just about done with mine. A few more years in college and the last one is ready for making his own way in life. I'm happy my wife stayed home as long as she did. Nope, we don't have the big house, don't have 2 really nice cars in the garage and I don't own a $50k bassboat. The sacrifices were worth it though. Quote

I have to say though I feel EXTREMELY fortunate that we could make the economics work to do that. I know a few families who would love to do this but they simply cannot afford it. It is tough. I think my kids are better for it it. That being said I was raised in a split home, mom and dad both worked, grew up in daycares, but my parents made the absolute most of the time with me. it is funny cause though the majority of my time was in daycares, the majority of my memories of that period of life are the times with my parents.
