ptomacbass Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Does anyone here grow or pick Pawpaws? The Pawpaws have just ripened around here so I am going to go pick some. I have some Pawpaw trees in my yard that should have fruit in a year or two. Quote
NewAngler Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 dude, im in VA and have no idea what the hell a pawpaw is.. Quote

Other. Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Hey man I've been wanting to try some pawpaw since you told me about them some time ago. Where on the Potomac are you seeing them? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 2, 2009 Super User Posted September 2, 2009 I don't think I've ever consciously noticed that fruit. What do they taste like? Do you just eat them raw or use them in dishes? Quote
Triton21 Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 Nearest fruit I can compare taste to is a Banana/ Kelley Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 Dan, They taste like Banana and cantaloupe mixed in Vanilla custard. I prefer to eat them raw. Just don't eat the seeds or skin, you will not feel too good if you do. Brad, They grow everywhere in the Potomac valley, mainly from Piscataway on up. You will know when you have found a Pawpaw tree because if you crush one of it's leaves, it will smell like kerosene. Pawpaws grow in groves and maybe 1 in 100 trees hold fruit. You will find fruit where 2 groves meet. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 hmm, sounds worth a try. I'll have to see if I can find some. Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 Good luck, the Pawpaws will almost all be gone in about two weeks, so it's best to get out as quick as you can. Quote
Other. Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 With school I'm not going to be able to start looking for one until Saturday. Hope I can find something. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 can you buy them or do you have to grow/find your own? Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 You need to grow/find your own. Not many people know about them, and they transport terribly, so there is no market for them. There should definitely be some ripe ones on Saturday. Only some are ripe right now, and they are just barely ripe. Some of the best Pawpaws are almost black and really squishy, so even in late September, you may find an edible Pawpaw, though I doubt it. I do know of some specific groves with lots of fruit if you need help finding some. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 yeah, if you wouldn't mind giving me a spot to find them I would really appreciate it. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted September 3, 2009 Super User Posted September 3, 2009 No pawpaw trees in California that I know of. Quote

mikey16 Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 the only pawpaw i know can catch a fish every cast on a black texas riged worm, sometimes makes you wonder why we but so much stuff Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 6, 2009 Super User Posted September 6, 2009 I grew up eating them. Nothing better than putting a few hundred sticks of tobacco in the barn, then eating a tree full of them. Might have to go check the groves this week. Haven't had one in at least five years. Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 7, 2009 Author Posted September 7, 2009 I picked a couple today, they were the best I ever had. The flesh was butter colored unlike all of the other Pawpaws i have eaten before. Quote
1inStripes Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I was looking at paw paws 2 weeks ago and thought about how long it had been since I had eaten one. I may need to go back and see if theyve browned up nicely or not. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 8, 2009 Super User Posted September 8, 2009 The best ones are those on the ground and covered in cow crap. Quote
ptomacbass Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 The best ones are those on the ground and covered in cow crap. I like them the most when I find them on the ground and they are all black. For some reason though, the newly ripe ones I picked yesterday tasted great. Quote
1inStripes Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 The best ones are those on the ground and covered in cow crap. I don't know about the cow crap part, but I do agree about those that have fallen off the ground generally. Quote
