Super User flechero Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 It looks like they are trying to get your SS # I'd bet that the "link below" is not really to the IRS site. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 That's not how the IRS works. Issues are always handled by mail. More serious problems involve certified mail. Don't open the link. BTW, Over the last couple of months I've won two foreign lotteries and someone left me a pile of dough in Africa! Oddly, I never bought any lottery tickets and don't know anyone in Africa. > Quote
done Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Scam man, there is absolutely no way for the IRS to contact you via email like that. No reputable business will ever do that. if you ever have thoughts to whether such an email is real, whether from the IRS, a bank, etc, open your phone book, find their phone number and call them directly. I will also reiterate, if they call you, refuse to talk to them, once again, hang up, look up their number and call them directly. I have had guys call me try to pretend to be my bank, insurance company, and even the IRS. The insurance one was almost comical as they could barely speak clear english and they did not even block their number on my caller ID (the police went to chat with them after that call). Don't even click the link, a lot of those sites have trojans embedded in them which will attempt to infect your machine as soon as you go there. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 might want to check the real IRS site and see if you can report that sender somehow. Quote
Super User Lund Explorer Posted September 9, 2009 Super User Posted September 9, 2009 Hey Palomar, Welcome to the wonderful world of phishing! The IRS never emails anyone, including us preparers. Here is the real link to the IRS website were you can report this scheme. http://www.irs.gov/privacy/article/0,,id=179820,00.html?portlet=1 Quote
looking4structure Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Don't give any personal information. Its a a scam or some kind of virus. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 10, 2009 Super User Posted September 10, 2009 Scam without doubt, not all individuals have a taxpayer id, if you do,check your latest return and see if the numbers match........IRS mails only and it's a manila envelope, standard IRS info is always a white envelope. I retired my business in 2004 and I still receive mail about quarterly estimates and similar matters. I would not hesitate to call my CPA and have him/her take care of the matter. Quote
Palomar Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Thanks fellas, I didn't click nothen, so I Plan on turning it over Quote
