Super User Tin Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 Well the doctor put me on them today (prednisone) to help with the Crohn's disease now my question is how do I avoid blowing up like a wood-tick on them? Anyone had to go on them or anything? I called a few friends that were on them for cancer and various things but I'm going to be on them for a while. All of them also gained any where from 30-70 pounds in just a few months on them. I have dropped about 80 pounds since high school 2 years ago and don't want to get chunky again. The tracker only goes about 35mph as it is and I don't want to go any slower than that. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 what in them makes you gain weight? I had never heard that before. Quote

Super User Tin Posted September 5, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 5, 2009 what in them makes you gain weight? I had never heard that before. The doctor and a few others all said it makes you basically unable to stop eating and you are always hungry. You also retain a lot more water. (I know school is back in, you drinking?I know you're smarter than that) Quote

daviscw Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Dude, try out for the MLB Oh, BTW... My dad is on Prednisone. I had no idea they were steroids though. He gained a lot of weight. I mean A LOT. I had never seen someone eat so much before. He would still be eating 10 mins after supper, then eat a bag of popcorn before bed. Mom cracked the whip though, and now hes doing a whole lot better. I guess the best thing is to be prepared and know its going to try to get to you. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 My mom has been taking prednisone for Crohn's for at least 10-15 years. I haven't noticed a change. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 Well I knew that steroids make you gain muscle (or at least makes it easier to do so) but I had no idea they could make you fat. Is that common knowledge? I'm not sure how I would know that. I figured it was partly a water retention thing when you mentioned it but I didn't know that was a common side effect. Oh and btw, I'm done with school 8-) Quote

You should see a dog on roids. Tom's Boston Terrier looked like a body builder after a month on them. Quote
Super User Tin Posted September 5, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 5, 2009 So I'm going to look into it now. So hopefully if I go nuts at the gym it could get me looking like Burley and not Jared before Subway.. Quote

seyone Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Prednisone is a steroid but is not anabolic. Meaning it does not build muscle or increase strength. Quote

seyone Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 The dog in that pic (if it is real) probably lacks the myostatin gene. It is a gene that tells your body to stop producing muscle mass. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 Close. He was one scary ankle biter. Quote
Sfritr Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 My father was on Prednisone for arthritis. It did not make him gain weight but it does ruin you liver after extended use. Have your doctors tried Remicaid(sp?) My buddies' went into remision and is still doing great almost 9 years later. It is expensive as hell though. good Luck man. That disease is NO joke Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 I was on Prednisone last year for a few weeks and I ate like a shark. I could not stop myself. Thank God that's over. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted September 5, 2009 Super User Posted September 5, 2009 I was on Prednisone a couple years ago when I had a Cluster headache occurance. It's a typical first line of defense for cluster headache sufferers but that stuff is nasty. 1. I did eat more. I gained weight which I've had a hard time taking off. 2. Although I was on it for about 3 1/2 weeks I started noticing food had no taste anymore. Everything had a metallic taste. 3. Blurry vision 4. Difficulty in sleeping. Ironic that the cluster headaches for me happened at night and made sleep an impossiblility for any length. The presnidone merely made the sleeping issue continue to be a problem. 5. Some irratibility. Nasty stuff. I started at 80mg. I was supposed to take that for a week. It worked. Knocked the headaches right out but 3 days into the taper down at 60mg and the headaches came back. I requested more to stay at 80mg till I could see the neurologist. I could only last about 2 weeks more on the 80mg. That stuff is nasty. I had every side effect the drug is known for plus a few others (involuntary muscle spasms in my little finger and toe on one side of my body). Yech..... I see if there was another drug you could take. Quote
done Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 My cousin got put in 'roids after a brain tumor. The tumor also destroyed whatever in her head told her she was full. So she would never feel full and she has an absolutely ravenous appetite thanks to the 'roids. She went from a slim 140 to 300+ lbs in less than a year. Quote
