Super User burleytog Posted August 29, 2009 Super User Posted August 29, 2009 A four month obsession with football kicked off tonight. Spent the fourth quarter standing on the sideline in a pouring rain trying to keep my phone dry. The fact that my alma mater lost on a last second FG made the drive home even more miserable. Hard to believe that in just 14 weeks the HS season and deer season will be over. d**n time flies... Quote
Super User Dan: Posted August 29, 2009 Super User Posted August 29, 2009 My high school's team sucks. The team was good when I was there (I didn't play) but it's been worse and worse ever since. At least you can stand to watch your high school's team...Normally I like to watch high school sports the best but this year I'm more excited to watch my college's team. Did you ever get to see Gretna play? Apparently they have been stomping the entire Group A for the past couple years Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 29, 2009 Author Super User Posted August 29, 2009 Started to stick around to watch them play in the state final last Dec. in Salem, but the snow was pouring and we were three hours away from home. I saw some video from that game. Probably the best single A ( shyeah, right : ) football team I've ever seen. Or at least right up there with the Thomas Jones/Julius Jones Powell Valley teams or the Appalachia teams from the early 90s. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted August 29, 2009 Super User Posted August 29, 2009 the best teams I ever saw were the championship Manassas Park teams from a few years back. I think the one year they beat Powell Valley for the championship and the next year they lost by one to Giles. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 29, 2009 Author Super User Posted August 29, 2009 Region B is a hotbed of football these days. Mostly due to the asinine way the VHSL is determining division placement these days. Quote
preach4bass Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 What's your home school Burley? You around the Beaver; Graham rivalry? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 30, 2009 Author Super User Posted August 30, 2009 I'm a couple of hours away from Bluefield. Quote
Super User CWB Posted September 1, 2009 Super User Posted September 1, 2009 We had Rashard and Walter Mendenhall for four years and those were the best 4 years in the last 20 for our program. My son played Freshman year but hurt his back and is now only doing baseball. I got to coach Rashard when he was in the feeder program. What a special athlete. Electric. How's he doing in Pittsburgh? He got hurt, didn't he? Can't beat Friday Night Lights! Quote

Super User Dan: Posted September 1, 2009 Super User Posted September 1, 2009 Where did the Jones' go to school? I can never remember. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted September 1, 2009 Author Super User Posted September 1, 2009 Thomas went to UVA, Julius went to Notre Dame. Quote
Bull Hurley Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Powell Valley High School in Big Stone Gap, funny thing is they lived in Appalachia the next town over which had a good football team as well that competed for state titles just in the next lower division. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 1, 2009 Super User Posted September 1, 2009 Is Appalachia in the same district as Covington? We played Covington one time and I believe there were some Appalachian fans down there at the game. Quote
Bull Hurley Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 They're not in the same district but they are in the same division, the 2 schools are about 3.5-4 hours apart. If it was late in the year a good posibility they were their scouting Covington for the playoffs. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted September 1, 2009 Super User Posted September 1, 2009 nah, they were saying something about being rivals because of their proximity. I just looked it up and it was Alleghany. They are a AA team. Quote
