Super User Sam Posted August 25, 2009 Super User Posted August 25, 2009 Friend told me today that it is bad to put minnows into ponds as they can grow to up to 6 or 7 inches and they eat bass eggs. I did not agree and was stunned when he told me this. What do you guys think????? Quote

Eating bass eggs ---> I don 't think they can even reach 6-7 inches, most probably they end up as lunch in the first couple of weeks. When I stock tilapias in a bass pond I have to stock tilapias at least 8 inches long, anything smaller ends up as lunch almost as soon as I open the bags and they begin swimming in the pond. Quote

Posted August 25, 2009 Super User Posted August 25, 2009 yeah minnows are any fish in the ciprinidae family, which is a really big family. plenty of "minnows" are well capable of getting 6" long. heck, golden shiners are sold that big as bait in florida! but like others said, the minnows would probably be eaten before they pose a threat to eggs. i'm not even sure if golden shiners will eat fish eggs. I have fished golden shiners 6" long for many years; They currently go for 12 bucks a dozen 6 inch shiners are common and not unusual I have seen them from The East Coast to South Central USA , they are a regular live bait Quote
