ROCbass Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Late spring/ early summer I was fishing a lot and loving it, but then my summer job as a camp counselor started and I was working 6 days a week and had very little desire to do anything but sleep on my one day off. As a result I have not been fishing in probably two months. Last Friday, just as the camp season is starting to wind down and I'm thinking I might be able to get back out on the water a few times before I go back to school, I broke my leg and found out that I will not be able to walk without crutches for 8 weeks. Looks like fishing winter came early this year... Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 18, 2009 Super User Posted August 18, 2009 That's a bummer. Why let a broken leg deter you from fishing. I broke my leg and needed surgery including a plate to repair it in 1963. It happened on August 8th, I was discharged from the hospital on the 29th, and fishing the next weekend. At the time, I had been fishing regularly with a friend, and like you, I figured I was done for the rest of the season. My friend figured we could place a plastic bag over the cast that went from my foot to above my knee, to keep it dry and clean. Put an elastic band around the top to form a seal, and I was good to go. It was a bit awkward, but it worked, and it was better than staying home twiddling my thumbs. Quote
ROCbass Posted August 18, 2009 Author Posted August 18, 2009 I might able to to figure something out, but the surgeon was pretty insistent on no weight bearing for 8 weeks so if i did go it would have to be from a chair on the bank, and I would need someone to help carry my tackle and drive me there. Until i go back for my follow up appointment in two weeks I don't want to push it too much, and after that I will be back in college focused on finishing my last semester of undergrad and probably won't have a lot of time for fishing anyway. Not many of my college friends fish so I don't know how willing they would be to help me out when i do have some free time, although I suppose it could be a good opportunity to get them into it. Super User Fishing Rhino Posted August 18, 2009 Super User Posted August 18, 2009 I fished from a rowboat. The only trick was getting into and out of the boat using only my good leg. An assist from my friend made the process easier. Once in, I was seated, and he did all the rowing. He also did all the lugging of gear. Not so much gear to tote back in those days. We each had a small tackle box and one pole each. Quote

"hey, wanna grab some beer and go fishing?" "i dont know much about fishing, but i sure as hell drink" cant be that hard! Quote
brgbassmaster Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 if you got a boat just sit on the front deck seat. then you will have no weight on it. fish al day have your buddy help you load and unload. Quote
done Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 If you fish from shore, find ya a spot where you can put a folding chair down and get ya a net with a long handle, still good to go. Get someone to help you set up, and don't drink to much liquid, and you will be fine. It sucks man, last year I has double hernia surgery and could not go near the water for 2 months. I was so miserable. Soon as your time is up, head south, do some fishing or head west (visit SUNY Fredonia) and hit Erie. they got docks near Dunkirk, or head to Buffalo, and/or City of Tonawanda, the Niagara never freezes just dress warmly. Super User fishfordollars Posted August 19, 2009 Super User Posted August 19, 2009 did not stop me. FYI, I have several pair of like new crutches I'll send you if you like. Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 19, 2009 Super User Posted August 19, 2009 Hate when that happens. Take it easy and bone up on your reading and watching fishing DVDs. Organize your tackle, too. Get well and you will be back on the water just in time for the fall bite. Quote
