Triton21 Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I posted "HELP GEEKS" yesterday. dick came to my aid. He spent many hours online yesterday and today,(with my wife, the 'geek' in our family), trying to straighten out my problem with this site. He narrowed down the location of the 'bottleneck' in the system and gave great tips on how to proceed from here. Brian, I don't know how to thank you for your time. You have gone above and be-on to help. You have some liquid refreshment coming at Pickwick. Kelley PS: Still slow but wife is still working on it. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted August 5, 2009 Super User Posted August 5, 2009 Brian is just one of the nicest people I've ever met. If only he would buy an accurate scale. Quote
I Love BassResource Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Was my pleasure! Look forward to kicking back with you at Pickwick. Oh and Burley, my scales clearly read 5lb 4oz, that kills you don't it... lol Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 5, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 5, 2009 Curious what the issue was now. Quote
I Love BassResource Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Doing an nslookup on any site from his home pc, his primary DNS would fail. His home router is pulling an invalid DNS record from his DSL modem. Current theory is his DSL modem has incorrect DNS settings, as the primary record fails 100% of the time, while the secondary will randomly work. A tracert to the BR site will usually timeout on most hops, while a tracert to google will at times work and at other times fail. Connecting the PC directly to the modem does not resolve the issue, so I've suggested they ask their ISP to refresh their modem settings, or have the modem replaced entirely. I could sit on the modem and hit the BR host directly and lose almost 70% of the test packets being sent. I can sit here at work, pure fiber, and the only place I ever see packets being dropped are once I'm in the server farm at the *.theplanet.com Quote
Triton21 Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 Just reconfigured router and got a new modem from ISP, Same problem. Kelley Quote
Triton21 Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 I am so angry at my ISP I could spit nails. If there was another provider in area I would switch. It's a B!tch living in the country sometimes. Brian and my wife worked on this problem for the better part of 2 days and Still same problem. I guess I will just log-in and ck for messages. I still am amazed at the knowledge Brian has about computers. My problem is I know how to turn mine on and post mu frustration!! Kelley Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 5, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 5, 2009 Interesting. Earlier I had suggested to Kelly's wife to update the firmware on the router, as it sounded like there was a DNS issue. I don't know whether or not she did it, however. :-/ Quote
I Love BassResource Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Valid suggestion, but I was sitting on the modem, which would have eliminated their "local" network equipment. I personally think the problem is one of 1) Your local ISP's Primary DNS Server is hosed. This would cause issue with all their customer base. 2) Your modem isn't properly pulling DNS entries from your ISP's DHCP servers, which would cause problems specifically for you not necessarily anyone else. It doesn't sound like the tech has found a problem. So assume I"m either wrong, or the tech is not aware of, or knows how to fix the core issue. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted August 5, 2009 Super User Posted August 5, 2009 Does this sound like chinese to anyone else? I mean, I am pretty computer literate and know some of these acronyms but I cannot make sense of this stuff. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 5, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 5, 2009 Hmmm.... I guess "sitting on the modem" would eliminate any winsock2 corruption errors or a corrupt TCP/IP stack? If not, I'd reset them, and flush the DNS just to be safe. Just be sure to try resetting winsock first, and then the stack if all else fails. Doing these, plus updating the router firmware and using a new modem, pretty much wipes out any possible problems at the user's end. At worst, it purges everything and cleans it all up. Quote
Triton21 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Glenn, Thanks for the suggestions. Wife is familar with this. We have a few buzy days ahead and may be Sun or Mon before she gets to it. Kelley Quote

Yeah, for good measure I uninstalled and reinstalled the tcp/ip stack, flushed the dns cache, released, renewed, etc.... I used teamviewer to remote onto his pc, so I had direct access. I'm a software engineer by trade, going on 14 years. I've worked for the DOD, Nationwide, and a couple of other large firms throughout the mid west. I've written a slew of web based applications in which literally thousands of users (sometimes 100k's), typically underwriter/legal types, need to submit or upload various forms of data. I've dealt with issues just like this on a bunch of different occasions, and typically when we get down to this level of detail, its an ISP related issue or an issue being dodged by an internal IT guy. In this case I think we can deduct the internal IT guy. I have been wrong and I do over look things. Lets hope there is something obvious I've missed! Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 6, 2009 Super User Posted August 6, 2009 Kelley, it's about time you joined us in the 21st century and had electricity run to your house. I'm suspecting your windmill is giving out. Quote
Uncle Leo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 This is all Greek to me but it good to have you back Kelley! Quote
Triton21 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 I am barely back Leo. It is still taking me 10 minutes to do what I am used to doing in 2. Maybe between Glenn, Brian, and my wife we can get it straightened out. Kelley Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 6, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 6, 2009 Brian - I don't doubt your abilities, so I apologize if I came across that way. I'm just hope it is an ISP issue, otherwise it's something you and I both missed (including my server!). Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 6, 2009 Super User Posted August 6, 2009 Any one remember DOS, well that was my first puter, like a 486 or something like that. I was very proficient with it too, but I have let technology pass me by to the point that I UNDERSTAND ABSOLUTLY NOTHING any more.............gives me way more time to relax and go fishing. I still haven't figured out to send a text message or even why I would want to. Quote

I downloaded dos box a couple years ago so I could play my old classics: Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Star Wars: Rebel Assault. Those were the best Windows 95 DOS games lol. Full Throttle was the best though, I remember my mom telling my dad that I was not allowed to play it... so funny Quote

I mean, I am pretty computer literate and know some of these acronyms but I cannot make sense of this stuff. Man I tell ya, I even feel smarter after reading this thread. Kudos to you tech guys, this makes my head hurt just trying to understand what you all are talking about. I was real proud of myself for doing a ping test last year on my computer. You guys take it to a whole other level. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted August 6, 2009 Super User Posted August 6, 2009 You guys could complicate a tuna fish sandwich Kelley: Obviously your doodlenatutin conjecture inter phase is locking out all MNR's which then go right into the PWT's and never come out. Go to Tools then to I HATE MY COMPUTER then click and scroll down to POS and there will be a target come up in the middle of your screen, take a ball peen hammer and hit the target dead center and all your worries will be over Geezz!!!!!!!!!! Now my screen has a whole in the center and I can't see a thing. Is this normal? Any other advice? ;D Quote
Triton21 Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 I just got off the phone with the head guy of Internet at my ISP. He tried to double talk me into believing it was not his problem. I set his 'SH!T" straight in a heartbeat. They are now working on it at their end. I am dumb as a rock when it comes to computers but I can read what the experts say. I had plenty of ammo to use on him. Thanks Glenn and Brian for the 'ammo'. Kelley Quote
