Daniel A. Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 This past weekend, I took my mom and her husband out on the boat. They wanted to catfish, so I found a spot and anchored. While they were fishing, an older gentleman showed up at his camp, popped in a blues album, and cranked up his stereo. For about an hour, I listened to some of the best songs I've ever heard. The gentleman left, and I didn't ask him about the album he played. I've got some of the music stuck in my head...and I have no clue who it is. Someone direct me to some awesome blues. I need to pick some albums up soon. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 www.pandora.com to start off with. There are some pretty distinct genres of blues so it's tough to tell which kind to recommend without knowing what you heard and liked. For country blues, start with Son House, Lightnin Hopkins, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. For electric blues start with Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, BB King, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Boy Williamson (2) Those are my two favorite subgenres. Quote

bigtimfish Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Muddy that is a wonderful list. I would have listed Red House by Jimi Hendrix though. Also Edgar and Johnny Winter. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 Crap; RED HOUSE should have been there, thanks! I love Johnny Winter, like I said that was a quick list, I could easily triple it in size! Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 I have a CD of Johnny Winter performing with Muddy Waters that is pretty sweet. My friend works at festivals in New Orleans and he just recorded a Johnny Winter set. He got me a copy but I haven't received it yet. Quote
bass wrangler569 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I can't add anything to muddy's list, my personal favorites are SRV, Hendrix, and Johnny Winter Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 If you like Johnny Dan; here is HIGHWAY 61, from Captured Alive. Good, but not as great as many rave it to be. I listen to it about once a month since it came out ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTs_geRvKWc sweet! Johnny Winter has got to be one of the very best electric slide guitarists ever but sometimes I just need the other side of the slide spectrum like Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 btw, if you decide that you like acoustic blues, check out Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. They are one of my favorite harmonica/acoustic guitar duos Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 btw, if you decide that you like acoustic blues, check out Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. They are one of my favorite harmonica/acoustic guitar duos Now Team Depends in the House: Saw them at Newport Folk Festival a long time ago. Check out Son House, and early Bonnie Raitt, that's who she learned from! 8-) Love the McDowell Reordings; do you have any Lightin Hopkins? Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 That would have been awesome. Brownie has a fantastic voice and Sonny is probably my favorite harmonica player. I also have a CD of Lightnin Hopkins with Sonny and Brownie which is an awesome CD as well. I am a big Son House fan as well. Quote
llPa1nll Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 love that Etta James recording Muddy Great list, indeed... Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Muddy, you left a few out: Freddie King John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers BB King T-Bone Walker Mike Bloomfield Big Bill Broonzy Just to fill it out. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 29, 2009 Super User Posted July 29, 2009 I wouldn't include Mayall on any of my lists. I saw him a few times in the 60's and 70's , just did not have the feel right for me Quote
bigtimfish Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 In the version of Mannish Boy that I have, there is a dude yelling YEAH! in the background, throughout the whole song. I was told it was Johnny Winter. Anyone know of the truth in this? Quote

Super User J Francho Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Have no idea how the above link fits in ? :-? I'm surprised you haven't heard TBK....they are the shiznit. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 I am officially old, I don't feel them at all. I went to you tube checked out a few, not my bag Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 No sweat Muddy, I absolutely cannot stand Clapton. Seriously. He retards my brain. Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Me too, very proficient player with a ton of technique and not a whole lot of feeling. A lot of those English guys are like that. The funny thing is a lot of guitar players rag on Keith Richards, and I think he's one of the few from across the pond that actually has it right. The Black Keys are just not my sound I have no opinion on them at all, just not for me Quote
bigtimfish Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 No sweat Muddy, I absolutely cannot stand Clapton. Seriously. He retards my brain. He had two of the most memorable riffs ever. Layla and Sunshine of your love (cream). He isnt the greatest by far but you gotta give him some credit. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Me too, very proficient player with a ton of technique and not a whole lot of feeling. I agree 100%. The "Me and Mr. Johnson" album that was his covers of RJ's songs is just flat out plain. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 Matt and J Francho, it's good to see there are a few other Black Keys fans here. I have all of their albums, although I didn't like the most recent one as much as others. I also have Dan Auerbach's solo album. It's good but nothing awesome. The Black keys are pretty raw but I love their sound. Muddy, have you ever heard of Junior Kimbrough? Quote
Super User Muddy Posted July 30, 2009 Super User Posted July 30, 2009 No. Most of the folks I listen to currently are iether from Memphis,Texas or Louisiana. I like that swamp funk/ blues fusion sound lately Dr.John Jon Cleary Walter Wolfman Washington Quote
