How much does it cost to ship RODS

I have a few rods id like to sell and was curious as to how much it cost to ship them.

Once a rod package goes over 6' in length, it goes into a different charge rate since the carriers, USPS, UPS and FedEx are not equipped for something that long to go down their normal conveyor systems in their distribution facilities. It has to be hand carried. That's what adds to the price.

I ship single rods in 2" pvc well casing you can get at Lowes for around $5. A single 6'6" rod will take at least a 79" length of pipe. Depending on where it's going determines the price but I've paid anywhere from $15-21 to ship a rod like that. There are formula's they use that add length, circumferance, weight and then the zone it's going to.  Obviously, a 7' long rod will cost more.  Always collapse telescoping flippin sticks to save money.  

Rods 6' and under usually don't cost much more than $12-13 to ship.

The USPS here has different limitations than! I can ship up to an 8' rod with no surcharge. As long as it is Priority and not Parcel. I shipped one from FL to TX(7' 6") for $13.78 in a 2" PVC tube.

I've noticed that the formula for determining the surcharge is completely determined by how the person at the counter interprets it.  Most of them charge me a standard $18-21 to ship, others seem confused by the formula and what exactly to measure and I wind up paying much less.  It sounds like you've got some postal worker that doesn't understand the formula.  I'd always make sure he/she was working when I shipped rods.

Well, the answer is "it depends".  For example, we typically ship 10 rods in a 4" pvc tube, and it costs between 30-50 dollars, depending on how far across the country we're shipping.  Obviously, for folks above, it costs less.

I traded a 7' rod with a guy in San Frisco for a 6'6" rod.  USPS charged me $12 and was going to charge him $30.  On his second visit he told them what I was charged and they charged him the same.

Here is what I have found from shipping multiple rods. If you do not have a tube, you can get a 2" PVC pipe from home depot for around $4.50 cut to length. This will work for all casting rods. 3" will have to be used for spinning rods bc of the big first guide. These size tubes will allow for space to wrap rods to prevent damage as well. If you already have a tube that will work then you're already set.

As for shipping. Cheapest is USPS priority mail. Most expensive is UPS. FedEx is somewhere in between, but closer to UPS than USPS. UPS cost me about $25 to ship from Chicago to west coast. They measure length and diameter to figure charges. (I do not know the formula). USPS 2-3 day Priority will run about $15 to the same place. I always add delivery confirmation, their tracking, and insurance. Its like $.70 and $3 respectively. They also measure and charge accordingly, but their usually isn't a surcharge for a 2" tube of 7'2.  I have had a surcharge when shipping a 7' spinning rod in a 3" tube before. You can see each companies website for surcharges. If you ship with USPS it shouldn't be much more than $20 no matter where is goes. ( This is including a surcharge if needed) I hope this helps.

It depends.  Anything over 72" can go into the balloon surcharge rate if other factors such as diameter and package weight trip it.  In my case, that well casing is schedule 40 which is heavy.  It sends most of the meters off the chart UNLESS the worker decides to measure the diameter and not the circumference of the tube.  That's always been the kicker.  The guys that know me at the PO (I've shipped probably a hundred rods) will punch in the diameter and skip the circumference, that gets me a cheaper rate.
