Palomar Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 US considers paying off opium farmers in Afghanistan I heard it on the radio this morning and couldn't find it on the big news channels but found it here http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25819402-663,00.html Theres no way this will fall thru but, they need to find out who thought of that one and FIRE the idiot : Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 22, 2009 Super User Posted July 22, 2009 This has been on the table for a while and no President has authorized it. Seems we can't stop them from growing the poppies so we will pay them not to grow them, with the hope that they will take up normal farming. And yes, cows do fly. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted July 23, 2009 Super User Posted July 23, 2009 I should know more about this but I just can' remember right now. Didn't Pres. Nixon do something with the poppy fields back in the 70's that worked quite well? Quote

Super User Root beer Posted July 24, 2009 Super User Posted July 24, 2009 i dunno. they pay cotton farmers to not plant cotton. makes sense to me. Indeed, they also paid dairy farmers to kill their cows or export them in the 80s. They also told American farmers to set-aside their land and do not farm on it. They also set the price of commodity above the market equilibrium price and when farmers couldn't sell all the product, the government bought them. The only perfect competition industry left in America the government subsidizes it. Yeah, it nothing new. Call me when something new is reported. Quote
Eddie Munster Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 They ARE doing it and DON'T call me Shirley........... Sorry couldn't resist. Love the movie Airplane. Quote
Super User Dan: Posted July 25, 2009 Super User Posted July 25, 2009 I am not sure if the land in Afghanistan is able to produce other crops. They need to make money some way and I'm not sure they know or are capable of doing it in other ways right now. Hopefully that will change soon. Quote
