tallydude Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 So my mother-in-law heard that I had been griping about not having a cast iron skillet. Today, a 10 inch Le Creuset cast iron skillet arrives at my doorstep from Williams-Sonoma. And then she had the audacity to apologize that it wasn't here for my birthday. I swear to god, if something ever happens between me and Christine, I'm keeping Carol. ;D Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted July 21, 2009 Super User Posted July 21, 2009 I have some very old Wagner skillets and some by Griswold. Nothing like a well seasoned iron skillet. Quote
Big Phish Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 how have you made it this far in life without one? Quote
Super User burleytog Posted July 22, 2009 Super User Posted July 22, 2009 I don't know about your MIL, but your mom is quite the gal. La Crucet? La Crucet? ;D Get thee to a Wal Mart and buy a good Lodge. La Crucet... Quote
Bull Hurley Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I got to go with Burley, you kept complaining about not having one instead of dropping by WalMart and spending $16???? Along the same note my m-i-l gave me an old cast iron dutch oven. Quote
Bull Hurley Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 My mother in law usually only gives me headaches.....and Tequila Shots........................hmmmm........ I'll have to figure this one out....... b I think you got the order backwards, it's tequila shots then the headaches. Back to the cast iron I got on the le creuset website looking around and noticed they said that their cast iron was dishwasher safe. Who in their right mind puts a cast iron skillet in the dishwasher, or for that matter does anything more than scrape it with a plastic or wood spatula and wipe it down with light oil after using it. Quote
Bull Hurley Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I've heard of that method too. I just find it easier and quicker to do the scrape and lube while it's still hot, right after you use it and you keep a really good season to it. Quote
ohioriverrat Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I treat my cast iron better than my fishing equipment (OK, maybe not THAT well). I've tried both types of cleaning and, depending on what I've made in it, I use either method. But by far I use the scrape and lube method at least 2 to 1. Cast iron rocks. And now that I think about it, so does my MIL. Quote
tallydude Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 It wasn't that I was complaining about not having one, I had just mentioned to the wifey that I didn't have one, and she passed along the message to her mother. As for buying cooking equipment at Walmart, you get what you pay for. Burley, Le Creuset makes cookware that lasts LIFETIMES. This is what I got: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/c145_2/index.cfm?pkey=ccookware%2Dle%2Dcreuset&ckey=cookware%2Dle%2Dcreuset I've got several in the collection; I used my dutch oven tonight. Super User burleytog Posted July 23, 2009 Super User Posted July 23, 2009 As for buying cooking equipment at Walmart, you get what you pay for. I've got a Lodge cast iron skillet that is at least 20 years old and looks like new. My mom has a Lodge cast iron pan that she has been making cornbread with for over 30 years. Same stuff you can buy at WalMart. Lodge makes quality stuff. Quote
aceman387 Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 my wife and i started coking on cast iron skillets a couple years ago after seeing some report on 60 minutes that something like 90 some percent of us have Teflon residue in our systems from cooking in the Teflon coated pans. Quote

I guess I better tell my mom to stop using that cheap skillet that has been in the family for over 50 years it's lible to fall apart any minute. Quote
christopherjake Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 LOL. Wish my mother-in-law was that nice. Quote
tallydude Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 Well, she knows I like to cook and ever since her husband died, I've kinda become the family cook at family events. Yes, a lodge skillet would probably do fine, but she got me something nice and I appreciate it. Quote
