The end of the Viet Nam war, the successes of the civil rights movement and the end of a recession is what brought things together, not the moon shot

Well, I consider reaching the moon one of the greatest achievements

in the history of mankind. Now, let's commit that same resolve and

determination to solving our energy issues with a similar ten year plan.

Frankly, solving this problem should be much easier and would do more

for the people of this planet than anything I can think of.

Yes, of course we landed on the moon.

Now, are we going to Mars????

There are a few people in Washington DC that I would like to send to Mars.  ;D

While I do not feel your enthusiasm for the moon landing, I agree that it would be great for us to make such a ten year commitment to finding a solution to getting us off of oil dependency.

The greatest achievement of mankind : From Paulings identification of the Amino Acids present in DNA to  Decoding the Amino acid sequences of the DNA Helix, by Watson and Creek . We will get more knowledge of how we evolved, maybe even an understanding of the big bang theroy, disease cures and an array of medical benefits we have not even discovered yet,

"Like what? I mean, I understand the whole Cold War aspect but are there any real tangible benefits?"

Velcro and Microwaves to name two.

And did you know that the automobile rear view mirror is an invention from NASCAR?

Wow: we spend all that money, to go to a barren celestial body, that will never support life, but we can cook food faster and shoelace factories will be closing world wide

I say lets spend a whole pile more to go to Uranus, because it sounds like the place all these good ideas come from anyway

The advancement of science and technology are NEVER a waste of money. The Apollo missions took place when America most needed a boost in morale. The Viet Nam war, coupled with both Kennedy's and MLK's assassinations made the U.S. of A. a somewhat dreary place. The Apollo missions restored our self-respect and gave the Russians a very bloody nose. That was very important to America's self-esteem at the time.

Further, it set the stage for the Nations of our planet to cooperate in exploration of our solar system and beyond. The wonders that have been revealed are beyond imagination.

Waste of money? Get real.

Like what? I mean, I understand the whole Cold War aspect but are there any real tangible benefits?

Hmmm... Maybe how the Earth was formed???

By the way, tune in to Mythbusters. They are doing a special on this very topic.

What does it matter how the earth was formed? I mean that's great that we know it but does it really change anything?

Knowing how the Earth formed tells us what the Earth is made of. Mineral and rock location in the Earth tells us about Earth's many processes, i.e, how mountains are formed, how oceans were formed, why California is breaking off the US coastline, why the eastern coastline is losing land. This information gives us a better understanding of plate tectonics, which helps us predict volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and weather patterns. This is just a very minute portion of what space exploration has changed, even though it had changed how and where we have lived.

Another thing, there are thousands of objects that have been invented since NASA started space exploration. Things you can't put a price on.

ya things that normal ordinary people will never use .some one said it brought jobs to certain places yup sure did and contractors too that pay 1 gran for toilet seats with OUR money. The Gov bites off more then it can chew  when it comes to space exploration. They say its for us to learn well aint we learning already on earth that cancer and many other dieseases cant be stopped .Horse comes before the cart.

:o What the heck happened :-?

The question is did they land??  ::) U guys are starting to be pretty funny around here to me on how ya like to react towards one another ;D crazy, wait a minute this is the friendly side right? ;D

So anyway, I think it was a failed mission and they propped up a set to take pics ;)  this can explain the footy prints under the ship :D and the letter C on the rock 8-)

I hope this does not startle you, but we already know a great deal of this information. I got a lot of it from a non science GEOLOGY course I took as an elective. If you spend about 6 months watching NOVA, this is also pretty evident.

I am gonna take a risk here, but I would bet the best place to study the evolution of earth, would probably be earth. ;D

I must have been having a blast :D. I remember reading about it after the fact and watching the tape of it on TV, but I don't remember the landing at all.

Duh!!

Do you think the Earth created itself?

The question was not "Why not study the Earth on Earth?", the question was, "What does it matter how the earth was formed?"

What is at the base of all food chains?    Water.

Water sustains life.

One day, this world will view water as the most precious commodity of all.

A few facts, rainfall totals have been recorded for over a 100 years, and  no matter how long the droughts we've been through lasted, the average rainfall totals are still ball park to this day.

If you averaged 20 inches a year in 1918, most likely, your still averaging that same total in 2009.

What has changed over the years?  Population explosions and usage.   The water demand grows every year.    In reality, mother nature is still doing what she always has.

We found frozen water on Mars.    Maybe thats not a big deal to most, but water is key to sustaining life.

Waste of time?   I don't think so.

Elvis was in one of the suits, and Michael Jackson was.... well... where to do think "the moonwalk" came from?  ::)

Oh, OH... bigfoot was in another suit, and the Loch Ness Monster was shooting the video.

Jeez guys, this is getting a bit ridiculous, now ain't it?  Seriously, don't you have better things to concern yourself with besides idle gossip?

So, did we land on the moon back in "69" or not?

"Actually" I just quoted the question

and the answer is a resounding, YES!

Just wait until North Korea launches a missile at us. Then you will see some benefits.

The question was not "Why not study the Earth on Earth?", the question was, "What does it matter how the earth was formed?"

Watson and Creek, more so Watson, after they decoded the DNA sequences, created an atmospheric model of what was in the air, pre mankind. DETERMINED FROM ROCK AND SOIL SAMPLES HERE.

They ran an electrical current through this , at the approx. Atmospheric pressure the earth had in those days

Result: Oraganic compands and precursors of amino acids formed and feel onto the bottom.

This can, and will someday help us understand how life ( First formed on the great oceanic floor) first showed itself, and how we evolved from this.

If you can get DNA Amino Acids to form, you can do certain work, without the use of human tissue in the future.

If you know how the earth was formed,it will help us understand where we are today

There is a scholastic debate going on, as rock formations on EARTH, have shown that the polarity of the Earth, reverses from time to time, and we have been over due for this. Since this would majorly mess up GPS and Compasses of all kinds, it would be good to know. The issue is the signs of global warming are similar to the signs of this reversal, so what exactly are we seeing here?

If we know how from the every beginning of things, earth and life formed we will know what is going on geologically, climatically and medicinally

Not to get religous, I also beleive God is the creator, I just do not know how he did it 8-)

Yep, that took a whole one verse to figure out! ;)

Oh, and how did He do it?  The rest of the chapter shows how He spoke everything into existance! :o

NASA could have saved thier billions and read the Bible, but I think the stuff they do is pretty cool anyway. :)

are we really any closer to living on the moon than we were 50 years and billions of dollars ago? Why not try to use that money and time to figuring out how to make Earth livable. (Overpopulation is mostly caused by poverty)

Overpopulation in the hills of Pennsylvania is caused mostly by the boredoom of winter ;D

Wasn't it Miller and Urey who conducted that experiment a year before Watson and Crick discovered the Double Helix structure of DNA?

Yes Jake, absolutely correct.

However the Watson models came later, after the Helix was mapped out. I have read different accounts. I will try to find the article, Watson's later works may have been questioned somewhat, but the later works, got some more complex compounds than Urey.

There is an issue as to what the atmospheric pressue and what the exact value of the gravitaional effect was at the time.

If you can point me to the info, would be greatly appreciated. Some of my favorite stuff studied years ago.
